Looking for Elizabeth Roberts born around 1860 in Llanfachreth Wales
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 05:14 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth was my Great Grandmother and she married Evan Evans (born 1861) November 19, 1885.  They had two sons in Wales, both were named Joseph Evans.  The first Joseph died before they came to the US in 1889.  Evan was from Penowyndeudraeth,  spelling is probably wrong because the Bible is faded.  The Bible says Mab Joseph Ellin Evans Lalsarnan Flwuf Llandacwin and North Merch Elizabeth March Morris Roberts and I can not read the rest.

Hi and Welcome to Rootschat

I think it suggests that Elizabeth was the daughter of a Morris Roberts " Elizabeth March (merch)  Morris Roberts"

Is this Elizabeth in 1881:

RG11/5547/81/2
Tyddyn y Bwlch, Llanddwywe
Gwen Jones, 72, farmer of 291 acres
Robert Parry, 58
John G Jones, 22
Hugh Humphreys, 17
Elizabeth Roberts, servant, 18, farm servant,(domestic), b. Llanddwywe

This could possibly be the family in 1871:

Penybryn, Llanddwywe
RG10/5693/15/3
Morris Roberts, 39, sawyer, b. Llanfrothen
Anne, 42, b, Llanfachreth
Mary, 10,  Llanddwywe
Elizabeth, 8, b. do
Edward, 6, b. do
Anne, 3, b, do

If so, I think that mother Anne is a widow in 1881 She and daughter Anne are boarding with the Williams family in Llanfachreth - RG11/5547/113/6

(Note that the marriage suggests that Morris was a miner  :-\  )

PS I think Evan would have been born Penrhyndeudraeth:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/018ue/

If my hunch of Morris and Anne as parents is correct, here they are in 1861 with Morris's parents:

Penbont ar Eden, Llanddwywe
RG9/4321/   40/2 and 41/3  (family on 2 pages)
Edward Roberts, 67, farmer of 146 acres, b.Montgomeryshire, Llanwrin
Elizabeth, wife, 65, b. Llanddwywe
John, son, 19
Morris, son, 30, copper miner, b. Llanfrothen
Ann, d/l, 32, b. Llanfachreth
Margaret, g/d, 10, b. Llanddwywe
Mary, g/d, 1 mth. b. do

Note that Morris is a copper miner in this census  :)

The marriage was actually on 12th Dec 1885 in Llanfachreth.

It confirms that Elizabeth's father was Morris Roberts and Evan's father was Joseph Evans.

It is on Familyesarch with links to the image on Findmypast.

You can go to http://www.findmypast.co.uk/ directly but it is very difficult to use since they updated the site.

This would be their marriage (of Morris and Anne) in 1857:

More details are given on www.findmypast.co.uk  (a pay site)

I assume that Margaret must have been born to Anne Owens before the marriage.

I know the little church at Llanelltyd - used to visit the village in my younger days  ;D

PS - David  - I've now got used to FindMyPast's new version - it's not very difficult at all  :D

I would like to thank all of you for this wonderful information.  My Mother turns 83 in September.  As a child she would spend hours looking through a box of family photos that have now been lost.  Elizabeth corresponded with her family for many years and the letters were all in Welsh so we could not read them.  I remember going through the box myself.  Since they immigrated in 1889, we were hopeful that there would still be family alive that at least remember stories of Evan and Elizabeth who went off the America.

Do you have access to any of the later censuses (1891-1911)?

It might be that some of their siblings remained behind and, by tracing them, you could possibly identify their descendants  :)

Also, there are Welsh speakers on here who maybe able to translate relevant parts of the letters  :)  Mine is just very ancient 'school Welsh'    :-\

I don't know how to access the census.  That is a great idea and I will see what I can find.
