John HAWLEY and Mary TALBOT marraige
« on: Tuesday 09 September 14 06:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find a marriage between John HAWLEY and Mary TALBOT (born abt 1783, daughter of Joseph TALBOT and Catherine SLATTERY), that probably occurred about 1805. Their daughter Eliza was born in Nottingham in 1808. They may have had more children, but I have not been able to find any as yet.

Many thanks,
Missy J

Is that the Baptism date you have for Eliza Hawley 1808 that I posted?

It appears to me she married Lot/t TORR.
One of their children has Hawley as a second name.

TALBOT was her maiden surname on her death index information. It's the first time I've come across it in our family tree. It might have been an error by one of the children filling it out or we have the incorrect death. I've requested more information from the cemetery about the burial to see if it has any more details.

Yes it's the same Eliza. She married Lot TORR and eventually immigrated to Australia with some of her children after her husband's death.

Thanks for the Burial larkspur as otherwise i wouldnt have looked for Lot/Eliza in 1861 (I had them 1841/1851)
Its strange as there is a Ann Milnes age 64 (1797) in the Household described as Mother in Law.

Maybe a separate Household that is mistranscribed?

1841 we have in Basford;
Mark Milnes 46
Ann Milnes 42
Mark Milnes 25
Ann Milnes 22
Elizh Milnes 20
Maria Milnes 1

Mark MILNES
England Marriages, 1538–1973
marriage:    18 February 1816 Saint Peter, Nottingham, Nottingham, England
spouse:    Ann FLEWITT

Bit of a strange one!

Back to Eliza Torrs Death Cert.
Do you have the Cert?
It that how you got Talbot?
You mentioned the name was on the Death Index.
From what I can see this is all the index has;
2498/1881, TORR, ELIZA, Fathers Given Names JOHN , Mothers Given Names UNKNOWN, Reg Balmain

Thanks guys for what you've found so far.

The information that I received from the cemetery shows the plot as detailed below (Roman Catholic compartment D Grave 472). None of this information matches what I know of the family so far  :( After looking up the son William, it shows he is the son of Mary TALBOT and William HAWLEY - so it's the wrong family!

Hawley, Martin aged 5 buried 06.03.1866

Hawley, Margaret aged 8 days buried 19.03.1867

Hawley, Catherine aged 7 days buried 14.02.1871

Hawley, William aged 45 buried 09.05.1872

Hawley, Mary aged 88 buried 22.06.1874

Backman, Margaret aged 4 buried 09.07.1874

The original lead, I'd received from someone else trying to investigate the same family, was the date of death on the Victorian index for Mary HAWELY (nee TALBOT). We haven't been able to find any other deaths in Australia so far with the appropriate name and age.

I don't have Eliza's death certificate, but can only see on the index her father as John, mother unknown.

Trish, after seeing your post I've had a look at the 1861 census and can see Ann Milnes still in the household, listed as "Mother in law". Definitely something to look into, but it only has her 11 years older than Eliza?

Not sure about the Mother in law, surely she is at a different house, there is a double mark to end the house of the Torrs?? Also her abode is listed as a separate house....but then she should be listed as Head of house. So puzzling ???

I've gotten quite a bit of information on the TORR family and can go back another 4 generations from Lott. The family was from Basford since the late 1600's.
