Hi Jim,

Sorry, I have only just picked my research back up after a long hiatus so I am a little rusty.

I haven't done any research on John Hume and Beatrice Liddel yet, as they are not my direct line.  My link is from Walter Hume and Margaret Scott's 6th son - Walter.  He married my GG Grandfather's sister.  However, I do have a specific interest in the line as apparently there was some kind of controversy in the family with one of the Walters.  My grandmother remembers her parents arguing about a Walter Hume when she was young and she specifically asked me to track him down.  I have now found several Walter Humes in the family and no controversy!

Anyway, back to the research.  I think Walter (son of John and Beatrice) was born on October 13th 1819 at Allanhaugh Mill in Hawick according to his marriage certificate (there is a lot of extra info on 1855 certificates that you don't get in other years), but I can't find the birth in the OPRs.  I would expect John and Beatrice to have been married before 1819 in that case, but I have no idea where.

Since John and Beatrice are not marked as deceased on Walter's marriage certificate, it might be worthwhile searching for them in the 1841 and 1851 census records - that should give their places of birth and approximate ages.  It might also be worth getting their death certifcates to work out their ages.

One thing to mention (and apologies if you are already aware) but you won't find a marriage certificate for John and Beatrice as they would have been married before the introduction of Statutory registration, so its the parish registers that will have to be searched.

I hope this helps a little.

Cheers,
Clare

Clare

Thanks for info.

John and Beatrix, ( also spelled Betrix and Beatrice ) appear in 1841, 51 and 61 Censi at Allanhaugh Mill, as does the son Walter in 1851 in the same household, but same address and different household with his wife Margaret (nee Scott )in 1861.

In the Census John Hume has his birthplace as Cavers, Hawick abt 1784.  There is a baptismal record for 1783 of a son baptised to the Father John Hume in Cavers  ( I have copy of baptismal record ), so must be him. Therefore Walter's Grandfather was also John Hume, residing near Cavers in 1783.  No more record of that John Hume yet.

Beatrix Liddel was born at Hobkirk, Rox. to Robert Liddle and Margaret Scott in 1789, therefore four years older. In 1861 Census she is recorded as 81 years old.

Hope this helps you too.

Jim

Hi Clare
I'm not sure if you'll get this as I notice the original post is pretty old. Do you still have spare certificates handy? If so could you let me have the details of :- 1898      Sophia    Laidlaw   Murray      Father:   David Murray   Mother:   Mary turner   Hawick

Sophia Laidlaw Murray was my great aunt.

many thanks,
Elaine
