Percival family at North Cliff Farm, Kirton Lindsey
« on: Saturday 23 August 14 11:55 BST (UK) »
My father, George Percival was born here in July 1919 of parents George Percival and Martha (nee Dand).  George and Martha hail from Carlisle but I cannot find out when they moved or where (if) they were married.  Any help out there?

Just a thought.   Have you found George in a census prior to his possible marriage to Martha?   Could George have been previously married??   Martha looks to have been in her late thirties when she had your father George.

According to the 1911 census they were both single and living with parents in Carlisle.  George was born in Ireby in 1892 and Martha in Carlisle in 1888.  That would have made her 31 when George junior was born.  There was a second son, Reginald, born in 1920 also at North Cliff Farm.

Thanks Rosie99 but my George married (or not) Martha Dand and their sons were George and Reginald born 1919 and 1920 respectively.  Couldn't be Hetherington. I still don't understand when they moved from Carlisle to Kirton Lindsey and if they were married when they did.  GRO has no record of a marriage.

Hi Clive

I was suggesting that the George that married Rosalind may be your George.  Rosalind's George does not appear to have fathered any more children with her and he did not go to the USA with her either.

This could be a very good reason why we can't find a marriage for your George to Martha Dadd as he would still have been married to Rosalind.  It would also have been a good reason to leave Carlisle for Kirton Lindsey where people would not know the couple or their background.

The address given for Rosalind on the emigration record is the same street that your George was living in on the last census.

Sadly the only way to prove this one way or the other is by buying the marriage certificate for George & Rosalind.

Hi Rosie

I was a bit slow on the uptake.  What you are suggesting makes a lot of sense.  My mother (his daughter-in-law) always maintained he was a bit of a rogue and my father would never discuss such things.  I will just have to bite the bullet and send for the marriage certificate.
I'll let you know
Many thanks

Clive
