Catherine Mckechnie
« on: Monday 27 June 11 21:00 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information on Catherine McKechnie who married John Grant or Ferguson.
I know they went by the name Grant.  However their son John did not change his name from Ferguson to Grant until 1937.
Catherine and John had the following children that I know of. John, William, Donald and Margaret.
John(their son) was born in 1879. He married Margaret Stella Mundell in July 1906.
I do not know the reason for the name change.

Thanks for any help

Hi Abydos

Do you have Catherine and John on any of the censuses and where did you get the Ferguson name change from?

On son John's marriage cert in 1906 (Glasgow), they are all down as Grant (Catherine m.s. McKechnie). John Snr was a distillery worker.

The only family that I've found that  fits this  in 1891 is in Glasgow:

486 N Keppoch Hill road, Barony, Glasgow
District 644/6 ED 76 Page 7

John Grant, 46, Distillery Labourer, b. Kilchoan, Argyll
Catherine, 35, b. Bowmore, Argyll
Maggie, 14,
John, 12
Catherine, 10
Donald, 6
Mary, 4
Ann, 2
Alexander Campbell, lodger, 20, distillery labourer, b. Bowmore
Norman Campbell, lodger,17 -do-, b. -do-
Elspie Campbell, lodger, 13, b. -do-

Grant children all born Glasgow

and in 1901

33 Bardowie Street, Maryhill, Glasgow
District 622/1 ED 29 Page 3

John Grant, 60, labourer in Distillery, b. Islay, Argyll
Catherine, 48, b. -do-
John, 22, stillman in Distillery
Kate, 20, cotton weaver
Donald, 16, labourer in distillery
Mary, 14, cotton weaver
Annie, 12
Willie, 9

All children b,. Glasgow

I can't find a marriage between a Grant or Ferguson and McKechnie at the moment.

I'm just trying to get closer to John and Catherine  - no marriage found so far and with children b. Glasgow, it's difficult to pinpoint births.  I don't see variations of  Catherine McKechnie b. circa 1855 Islay or Bowmore or Argyll on any of the pre-1881 censuses

When/where did John , junior, die? I'm wondering if the mother's maiden surname on his marriage cert was wrong.

I'm having difficulties  finding any sib who might be a guide.

Hi gnu
I have tried to find them in the census.  I ones I found match yours.
District 644/6 Ed 74 page 13 and District 622/1 ED 29 page 3
I am not sure if it is right I only know of john, William, Donald and Margaret.
My mom remembers seeing Johns birth cert and it read Ferguson but she was young and never asked about it.
My grandfather (John) didn't change his name until 1937. At this point all his children are born. Some even married. John passed away July 19, 1964 in Belleville, Ontario Canada
I am attaching wedding cert. birth cert. and the leagal papers for the name change.

Thanks again for any help you can give.

You are only allowed to post a small portion of a certificate for deciphering purposes and I suspect the copyright editor will remove the above certificate.

Hi abydos

Just started to relook at your problem and I've found something that might be of interest re the Ferguson change.

I note that one of the witnesses on John Grant's and Margaret Mundell's marriage cert  in 1906 was a Janet Ferguson Mundell. I presume she might have been Margaret's sister and John's brother Donald Grant was the other witness.

Just wondering if that's where the Ferguson came from   :-\

From what you've sent me it would appear that John went by Ferguson in Ontario but Grant on his marriage  cert and daughter's birth cert  :-\

When did Donald and John emmigrate to Canada?
