« on: Tuesday 28 January 14 21:39 GMT (UK) »
i am after information on my grandfather donald maclean ,all i know of him is that he was born on the isle of barra in the outer hebrides in approx 1898 and that he was a sailor and was swept overboard in a storm somewhere round the shetland islands probably in the late 1930's i know nothing of the vessel or the exact location , i would love to know how i can go about getting his service record and perhaps a photo of him . id like to know how i can go about getting his death certificate ? would it have been registered on one of the islands ?

Hi Kevin  :) ,

I have removed your other post from the Scotland Resources board as that is a board for information rather than requests.
Also , not a good idea to have duplicate posts on the same topic as that can lead to others posting information that has already been found.

Do you know who Donald Maclean's parents were ?
Do you know who he married ?

You mention a service record , did Donald serve in the Armed Forces ?

Hi Kevin,

I noticed you hadn't returned to your post?

There is a great site for Barra genealogy run by Vince MacNeil who has posted on RC (Rootschat) in the past but everyone on the site has roots/family connections there (including myself).

Hi Kevin,

There are two Donald McLean's in Barra in the 1901 Cenus, one born 1896 and one born 1900. What documentation do you already have for Donald?

Whilst having a look at Barra, I found this interesting website with some old photographs which I thought may be of interest to you http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/search/do_quick_search.html?q=barra&mime_type= they even have a register of Motor cars.

Regards

Sarah :)

Hi Joy,

2 Donald Mclean's in barra is not too many to sort out, both are son's of fishermen. It would really help us to help you if you could let us know what documents you have or have not. Family stories are also very important maybe the information is from our family?

Regards

Sarah :)

Hi
Donald's Parents were Hector MacLean (B1861) and Flora MacCormick (B1864 in Pabbay)
Hector's Parents were Neil MacLean and Christina MacPhee.
Neil's Parents were Donald MacLean and Mary MacKinnon

That is as far as I got Kevin
