There is a marriage between a William Alexander Hilton (father Mathew Hilton) and a Mary Jane Hughes in 1862
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/8c093c0557011
They in turn name their son, born in 1864 William Gaveston Hilton. http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/f95a8c0109545
(He marries twice in Virginia - last record I see is him in NYC in 1930 census)
Several trees on Ancestry have Mathew Hilton's wife as Mary McGaveston - sister of John and Nicholas. Don't see any proof but it does seem possible.

Re the 'Catherine Gaveston' - look back at the will translation and it mentions Nicholas McGaveston and his wife Catherine. He seems to have married a second time to Catherine Ennis 1843 - St George - Bloomsbury, London. He is a widower - Father Nicholas McGaveston.

Thanks Hasta thats some great information!

I emailed the cemetery about why the Joseph Samuel martin  was buried in the same plot. They responded to say he was listed as a family friend.

Ive also dug up some information from some very distant relatives of mine. The family about the family name goes that we are descendant from

Gascon family de Gabaston (Gersie, Arnaud, Piers). Piers achieved notoriety around 1300. Related to de Marsan, Caillau families (not to mention de Clare) before ending up in Ireland in the late 1700s.

Name corruptions are: Gabaston, Gaveston, MacGaveston, McGaveston.

There must be something about the names Nicholas McGaveston and John McGaveston,

There are passenger records for John arriving in New York in 1801 then being naturalised in 1804 and Nicholas arriving in New York in 1820 (his occupation listed as a grocer)

More US connections

The 1829-30 Manhattan Directory lists Margaret M'Gaviston widow of Nicholas at a boarding house at 25 Mott Street. Also a Catherine M'Gaviston at rear of 35 Spruce. This could be the one that died in NYC in 1836 aged 68 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F6SS-B2T

There was also a child Catherine McGaveston who died in NYC in 1836 aged 1  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FD15-LP2

The 1830 US census lists Mrs M McGaveston in Moore Street, New York.

A Marietta McGaviston married Casper Meyer in 1861 at Southold in Suffolk county, New York.

An Anne McGaviston died in New York in 1801 (Ladies Magazine & Musical Repository deaths).

A John McGaveston served with the US Marines 1837-1845.

A Nicholas McGaviston was born in New Jersey circa 1830-1840 and appears with family in the 1880 and 1910 US censuses

Hi ShaunJ

Where did you find that baptism? This si the Nicholas that died later that century and his father and mother of who we only know her first name - Rose

Ive seen the name Petrus McGaveston but couldnt link how he was related. Perhaps a brother of Nicholas (Senior)?

Re the USA McGavestons. So shortly after arriving in Ireland some of the McGavestons decide to move to the USA. Some of these would then be brothers/cousins of Nicholas Senior and other family members and then they names their children John, Nicholas.....
