Young & Robertson, Perth
« on: Monday 16 March 09 09:30 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me with this.  I have a marriage for William Robertson & Helen Young in 1853 Perth.

On the 1861 census William and Helen have 2 daughters Helen born abt. 1845 & Margaret born abt.  1851. Both born before the marriage in 1853, so not sure if girls belong to the couple or to one or other of them.  Cannot trace any bc's either under Robertson or Young.  Think they may be Helen's as a Helen, granddaughter aged 6 appears on the 1851 census with the grandparents Andrew & Helen Young.  But the 6 year old has the surname Watson?   I cannot find a bc under this name either.

On 1871 William &  Helen (as shown as ELEN) as still there along with daughter Helen (agian shown as ELEN) and 2 children Margaret aged 5 and William aged 1.  All under the Robertson surname.  William born 1870 Blackford in Edinburgh but again I cannot find a bc. He appears to be Helen (born 1845) son.

The 5 year old Margaret Donaldson Robertson appears to be the daughter of Margaret (born 1851).  Again no trace of bc.

To complete matters when Mgt D Robertson marries in 1888 she gives her parents as James Robertson dec and Margaret Robertson nee Young. I believe it should be Unknown possibly Donaldson and Margaret Robertson.  She married Joseph Watson Doig.  I know its still the right family as Joseph registered old Helen;s death in 1893 but he puts son in law whereas this should be grandson in law??

If anyone can decipher this and has any connection please let me know, Thanks Evelina

Hi, I may have some useful info at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=pete1731&id=I213. Margaret Donaldson Robertson birth recorded 5 Jan 1866 in Perth as Margaret Donaldson, the illegitimate daughter of Helen Robertson. Additions or corrections appreciated. Hi Ken, Thanks for your info, its led to a break through for me.  I take it you are related to the Doig family, your name gave me a clue lol. But are you connected to Helen Robertson nee Young? Helen was previous married to William Donaldson who then died and she went on to marry William Robertson.  pls pm me if you would like more details. Thanks again Evelyn

Hi Evelina,

Update at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=pete1731&id=I753.

Both Margaret Donaldson or Young (1866-1952) who married Joseph Watson Doig and her mother Helen Watson or Young were illegitimate. Helen's mother Helen Young later married William Robertson, and they all took the surname Robertson. There is no bloodline connection to Robertson.

William Robertson was born 11 Feb 1820 in Perth and died there on 5 Mar 1884. He was the son of Alexander Robertson and Elizabeth Archer. He appears unmarried with two sisters in the 1851 census.

Merry Christmas,

Yes thanks Annie, I know about the records starting in 1855 and the OPR's.  I am sure I will find what I am looking for eventually, it will be a surname difference or a unexpected place or something, will not give up till I get it.  I usually do even if its years later.  Happy New Year to you  :D
