Mystery marriage in Pallot's. Can't find anywhere else.
« on: Tuesday 21 October 14 10:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

There is a Pallot record for the marriage of a Jane Prigg and John Dudd in Ottery St Mary in 1828.

The trouble is, I can't find any other supporting parish record.

The name Jane Prigg does figure in my tree, where I have several supporting documents for a marriage to a Robert Dudd on Jan 30th 1828, also in Ottery st Mary.

I wondering if it's something as simple as an error on the Pallot record, and the John is really Robert.

I can't see a Pallot record for the Jane Prigg/Robert Dudd marriage.

I'm confident that Jane and Robert went on to have plenty of children, so it's not a case that Jane was almost instantly bereaved and remarried another Dudd.

Hope someone can shed some light on this.

Regards and many thanks,

John

From FamilySearch:

Marriage 30th January 1828
at Ottery St Mary

Jane Prigg to Robert Dudd

So, looks like an error on Pallot's?! ::)

Unfortunately, few Devon PR's are online.
So it looks like a visit to one of the Archives/Record Offices in Devon is a must?

Or buy the transcriptions from Devon FHS?

I'm leaning that way as well. I've also had sight of the original parish record, from which I assume the Pallot person would have extracted their note, and it's Robert and Jane. It just struck me in replying to you to have a look again at the parish record sheet and see who else is on there, and, while by no means conclusive "evidence" for a mistake, it is interesting to note that the marriage record directly above (of the 3 on the sheet) is for a John.

So perhaps the Pallot guy took that John and linked it with my Jane.
