Free Marston in 1881 is listed as unmarried and an engineer, could he have been an engineer on a ship and maybe lost at sea.

Recent found he was admitted into Holborn workhouse in 1877 and discharged 1878.

Still no other leads though

On 9 August 1877 he  is admitted to the Broad Street Workhouse in Holborn. He was discharged 26 July 1878.
