Glasgow Burial Records - An Update.
« on: Sunday 26 October 14 10:00 GMT (UK) »
At a recent talk by Dr. Irene O'Brien from the Mitchell Library she was kind enough to answer a few questions regarding the Burial/Lair Records previous only available through Glasgow Council Bereavement services.

1. The Original Records are still split between the Mitchell Library, National Records in Edinburgh and Glasgow Council - however the Mitchell is attempting to gather all of the books/records together and as soon as they are suitably catalogued they will be made available to the public in the Mitchell Library. (the records currently held by the Mitchell in book and microfiche form are still available at the Centre)

2. The Digitised Records - these are not in a format to be made available to the public - at least not yet. The Mitchell has the full records but they are NOT available to the public although the Mitchell Staff will search the records for you.
Unfortunately a fee has to be charged for any search being done :-
a) £10 if you know the year
b) a higher fee is to be charged if a wider search has to be done and the charge varies according to the amount of searching needed - no figure could be quoted but it was stated to be considerably less than the £60 charged by Glasgow Council for a similar search.

Dr. O'Brien stated that their preferred method of enquiry is via email

For anyone enquiring about the burial records in Falkyrn's post .....

The Original/Digital records apply to Glasgow City Archives, which although housed in the Mitchell Library are a separate department, see: http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries/the-mitchell-library/archives/Pages/home.aspx

Alternative records, i.e. microfilm records of most (but not all) Glasgow Cemeteries/Burial Grounds and published Monumental Inscriptions are available in the Special Collections department and can be browsed 'till your heart's content (especially if you don't have a specific date of death), see: http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries/the-mitchell-library/special-collections/Pages/home.aspx

Obviously looking through rolls of film isn't the same as seeing original records and the quality of the images can vary between pristine and extremely easy to read to completely illegible with bits missing (due to the fragility of the film/misuse?) - it's very much a case of pot luck.

All departments, including the Registrars (Genealogy Centre) are on the 5th floor of the Mitchell Library but each have their own opening times, so always best to check before visiting.

Anne  :)

Thank you both for that info  :) I missed seeing it a couple of days ago until now. Will make a big difference for those able to search in person and also those requiring a search.
