St Joseph's RC Church Gateshead
« on: Friday 16 January 09 19:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am a bit confused, I received a marriage cert today for my Gy Gt grandparents.
It states that the marriage was solemnized at St Joseph's Church, Hexham Road, Gateshead.

The only St Josephs I know of is on the corner of West Street and Walker Terrace in the centre of gateshead, which is very close to where both of them lived. Rabbit Banks and Grosvenor Street

However, Hexham road as I know it is in the swalwell area.  Can any one advise if there was/is a St Josephs church in Swalwell or know why it would state Hexham Road on the cert if they married at St Joseph's in the centre of gateshead?

Thanks

Emma

It's probably a clerical error.

I know someone who told me that though his parents were married at St Agnes' Catholic Church, Crawcrook the registrar entered The Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Byermoor on their marriage certificate.

Hello again Girdlese,
The only Roman Catholic church for Gateshead in the 1890 Directory is St Joseph's, West St, built 1854. Of course this is to the west of the town centre and of the original crossing of the Tyne where the old Hexham road would have started from. Probably the street names have changed with the expansion of the town and all the new bridges. Oliver's plan of 1830 shows a road marked from Hexham joining West St about opposite Jackson St.
Maybe there was a confusion with Bensham Rd too?
Yours Peter

Peter

That make much more sense now,  I had tried looking for some old street name on the net but couldn't find them.  My mam has an old street map of gateshead but as always when you want something you can't find it.

Thank you again,

Emma

Hi Emma

The Borough Arms on Bensham Road was listed as being on Hexham Road in trade directories in 1869 and 1873 so you have the correct St. Joseph's Church

I did have a photo of the Church that used to stand at the corner of Bensham Road and Alexandra Road, opposite the Borough Arms, and a nameplate attached to the wall read Hexham Road.

That is the church, I was just thrown by the reference to Hexham road, as I knew the church was at the bottom of walker terrace/bensham road having been in the church hall on a number of occasions.
Thanks to John confirming that the wonderful watering hole The Borough Arms on Bensham Road was listed as being on Hexham Road too it has solved the puzzle.
I am really going to have look at my mams for the old street map of gateshead to see where the old roads ran.  it's hard to picture it only ever knowing the newer road layouts.

Thank you

While you're looking for your mam's old Gateshead maps, try

www.picturesofgateshead.co.uk/local_maps

there's a map of Gateshead dated c.1938.

Could be useful
