Ross and McKinnan
« on: Wednesday 07 August 13 14:58 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am trying to find details on my ancestors: David Ross and Catherine McKinnan.
I do not know when they were born, nor exactly where, except that it was 'in Rosshire'.
Catherine's father was Alexander McKinnan

David and Catherine married at Canongate, Edinburgh 2 September 1807 and it is from this record that I gained the extra information.

(I am going to post this same message on the Edinburgh forum as well - just in case)

I know that my information is not very detailed but here's hoping!  ;)

Bye for now

Kirk

PS
David and Catherine had a daughter named Isabella who married James Tweedie, moved to London, where they had a tailor's shop, and died in the London cholera epidemic

Hi Kirk,

I done some checking and assumed David was perhaps 20 years old when he married but the ones I found have variations in birth dates H emay have been born 1777.

David Ross Baptised 31 March 1791 Parents Donald Ross and Margaret McKay but this would make him 14 years old which in those days was possible, however, he may have been born well before 1777.

Ross born 30 July 1787 at Fearn. No first name. No first name.

Ross born 14 November 1777 at Kilmuir parents David Ross and Peggie Ross.

David Ross Baptised  20 December 1780 father is down as Ross.

Best regards.

Archie.

Thank you Archie, that is very interesting.

In the interim I found more children for David and Catherine on the IGI:
John Ross - baptised 1813 at Fearn
Alexander Ross - baptised 1816 at Fearn
David Ross - baptised 1820 at Kilmuir

I know the IGI is not always reliable but the three children plus the fact that the daughter Isabella and her husband moved to Rosskeen and had at least one more child there (James b. 1833) makes me beleive it.
I guess the way to tie these all together is to find some of them in census returns.  I don't know whether they live in the area or in Edinburgh...   ???
Nothing is ever cut and dried in FT research is it!?

Kirk,  some Fearn info,   http://www.fearnpeninsula.org.uk/

I have Ross's from Fearn/Kilmuir Easter myself but no name match, very much Ross country so difficult.
