"...I haven't found anything interesting or not (apart from immigration records) about Mary Spiers family apart from births and deaths "

Do you have this obit. for William SPIERS, father of Mary THONDLEY nee SPIERS...

Thank you for all this information - I wasn't ignoring you all but have been away.   Always great to come back with a fresh look and new paths to follow up, all information is greatly appreciated.  Unfortunately I think future generations will have just as much trouble tracing us, as we do with the spelling alterations of previous generations names - either done intentionally or unintentionally back then!
Cheers

Thanks wivenhoe, yes I did from the Trove obt.  I wasn't initially comfortable with it being the right person as I couldn't substantiate the information about Alexandria and Egypt it seemed so out of character with what I (thought) knew of the family to date - perhaps it was his BW life (before wife life!!).  Anyway with everyone's pieces of information there can be no doubt it is my family.
Cheers

Here are the notes that I wrote about the Thondley name.  The Thomas referred to is, I believe, possibly Thomas Thornley who married a Hannah and had at least 3 children - John who married Mary Ingamells, Ann/Hannah who married Hardy Ingamells, brother of the aforementioned Mary, and Mary Ann who married William Walton in Queensland around the mid 1850s.

Notes:

Thondley does not appear as a surname anywhere else apart from when John Thondley and Mary Ingamells Thondley go to Australia.

John is married to Mary as Thondler, and the witnesses (William and Mary) sign themselves apparently as Thondler.

Ann / Hannah Thorneley, dau of Thomas, married Hardy Ingamells.

Hannah daughter of Thomas and Hannah Thonley (as indexed on LDS) but Thornley correctly written, was baptised at Boston St Botolph 20 Nov 1830.

Thomas's name in the 1841 census is written apparently as Thangley, although indexed on Ancestry as Hangley.  In 1851 his surname is written as Thonila.

Therefore my supposition is that the correct surname is one of the various spellings of Thornley / Thornalley, but that the phonetic spelling resulted in corruption at times - eventually leading to the Thondley variant in Australia."

Thanks BostonLil

these were my deductions too,  I am pleased to have this confirmed by someone else though and will add it to the family story now.
It's now to the Welch/Welsh/Walch/Wolsh side of the family that the family married in to - I wonder if we will be easier to track by future generations :)
Cheers

Good for me too to have a second opinion.  Thanks.  Good luck with your Welch etc names, they sound a nightmare! :o
