Do you by any chance know the names of any siblings to either of your people?

Sometimes more than one member of a family immigrated and it may give a little lead.

Neil has found a good possibility above-

Adding to this-
The Age, 27th April, 1855
Shipping. Arrived.
April 26th, Epsom, ship, 619 tons from Liverpool 21st January with 253 Government Immigrants for Geelong.

Sue

ADDING-
This lass was the only MAHER on board for this voyage.
MAHER Ellen Aged 27. APR 1855. Ship  Epsom (12 79)

Mary A was the only TIERNEY listed

Their Australian death certificates should tell you how long they lived in the State (if known by the informant), which may give you an idea when they arrived. (at the least you may be able to work out if their parent's travelled with them)

Bit of longshot but may be worth looking at-

Assisted arrival to Vic.

MAHER William. Aged. 25 MAR 1851. Ship  Harry Lorrequer 5 134

This man was single and born in Kilkenney, Ireland.
He could read and write and was Roman Catholic
He was an Agriculture Labourer destined for Melbourne.

Also on that voyage

MAHER, Mary. Aged 18.
She was unmarried and a housemaid to be employed by (Mrs?) Williamson in Melbourne.

The ship departed Plymouth Nov 1851

Co-incidentally there is not a marriage for a  William MAHER listed on the Vic indexes in the right time frame  (i.e.after Mary TIERNEY's arrival and also after the arrival of this Will. MAHER) other than the one to TIERNEY.

There seem to be a fairly large group of Williams arriving in the right period but I could not see one right age? I saw the one Sue has down but if correct (and many aren't) his birth year is wrong. It is a pity that many could alter their age to fit the criteria for immigration, which does make it hard. I have never seen too many sponsored Irish immigrants parent names on DC's, but years in colony yes.

Hi Neil and Sue. I have William and Mary Anne,s marriage certificate 1856 on which the witnesses are James Walsh and Mary Walsh. I was wondered if this Mary could be a sibling .Nothing else to go on.
Now will apply for W and M,s death certificates.
Thanks again wegsgirl

Mary WALSH could have been MARY MAHER previously? I wonder if there is an earlier marriage for her.
