Hi. It was listed as a boarding house in Kelly's directory with Felix's name. I'm assuming that means he was running it? Kelly's is a list of businesses I think?

Just found this when I googled the address:

http://www.theyworkforyou.com/debates/?id=1937-02-09a.219.6

If you get a long list of debates, scroll down til you get to the bit about mrs Merton. Kind of implies that Felix wasn't running it by 1937, if he ever was?

Hi, nannyj. Thanks for your further information. Although I don't know for certain, Felix may have bought the property as a business. He had been an advertising agent in London and may have "made" enough money to buy the business. If he had been successful and had been "leading the high life" it may explain his wife's cause of death ( cirrhosis of the liver! ), although of course I don't know. Anyway thanks again.

That's sad but explains her early death. Do you know what Felix died from? Maybe the same.

To nannyj, thanks for the piece about Mrs Mertens and her telephone in 1937. Felix had obviously moved on by then. When he died in 1943 from heart problems he was in hospital, although his address was given as Scratton Road, Southend.
