Thomas and Elizabeth Sedman in 1861
« on: Friday 29 August 14 13:44 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I've decided to resurrect this subject in a new thread as it might engender a bit more interest.
I have previously tried to locate Elizabeth Sedman (nee Holgate/Holdgate) as I believed that she was living alone from her husband of only a few months, viz ...

"Still can't find Elizabeth Sedman in the 1861 census and I've tried everything that I can think of.
She and Thomas only married in November 1860 and I can't work out why they would be apart in the 1861 census; as stated earlier, he is alone at the Talbot Hotel, Queen Street, Scarborough, Yorks. (RG9/3617 Folio: 81 Page: 27) and that is definitely him."

However, I have just looked at the original image of the above Thomas Sedman and it might not be him. The one on that census return is 34, a few years older than my Thomas Sedman should be.
This means that they are probably together somewhere ...

The two people in question are as follows:-
Thomas Sedman: born c1830 at Hawsker, North Yorks. (he is 68 upon his death on 10th August 1898)
Elizabeth Sedman (nee Holgate/Holdgate): born April 1840 at Thornton Dale

I can confirm that in 1871 census they are in Scarborough at 5 Fish Yard (RG10/4816 folio 111 page 44) along with children Mary (b.1863), Margaret Elizabeth (b.1864) and Louisa (b.1866), and in the following census years they are at 6 Fish Yard (1881 and 1891).

But where are they in 1861?
Are they at 5 Fish Yard already? I don't know - I have no way of checking.

Anyone else feel like chipping in at all? ???

Hi Isobel
Thanks for your hard work.
At least you seem to have knocked that theory on the head; one less avenue to explore. ;)

Yes, Heywood.
She's in Maltongate, Farmanby, Thornton-le-Dale, Pickering, North Yorks.
RG9/3644 folio 40 page 6

Or so I'm reliably informed ...

I wouldnt discount the Thomas Sedman you found at Talbot Hotel, gives age as 34 post boy but he is married and says son theres a married Elizabeth above him 24 cook could that be his wife?cant make out her name but maybe they didnt like employing married people.

Hmmm ...
The Elizabeth above Thomas Sedman on the 1861 is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
I really don't think this is our girl.
But I understand your logic in re: not wishing to employ married couples.

Is there any relevant information in your other thread? It would be good to have a link to read.

I wonder too if there were other births/ deaths before Mary which might preoccupy the family at the time of the census?

His age and place of birth seems to change. Who is his father on marriage certificate?

OK, Heywood ...

Here's the link to the other thread -> LINK

On the marriage certificate his father is Thomas Sedman, farmer.
