Robert Travis & Elizabeth Melling or Scott marriage, Belfast
« on: Sunday 06 April 14 10:00 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find a marriage for Robert Travis, a Wood Engraver, and Elizabeth Melling or Scott?

I believe their first child, Edna Melling Travis, was born in Belfast in 1913 (mother is down as Elizabeth Scott) however later children she is down as Elizabeth Melling (their sons Eric and Leslie who were born in 1915 and 1916).    Either Robert had two marriages (but the time is a bit tight) or she had possibly been married before.

The address for all three children is given as 49 Fairview Street in Belfast on their birth certificates and sponsor is Elizabeth Travis, (grandma?  auntie?)

Thanks
Ruth

Just to kick off, there are birth/baptism records for father's forename Robert on the AncestryIreland website (pay to view) for:

- Edna Malling Travis 1913;
- Eric Melling Travis 1915;
- Leslie Melling Travis 1916;
- Francis Travis 1919.

Also, the 1918 Belfast street directory, courtesy of the Lennon Wylie website, has the following entry for Fairview Street:

49. Travers, R., wood engraver

Probably still in Belfast until at least 1923, the Belfast City Council website has a burial record in the public ground, as follows:

Name of deceased: Child of Robt C & Elizth Travis
Last place of residence: 49 Fairview St
Age: Stillborn (Female)
Date of death / burial: 1 March 1923

Thanks Gaffy  :)

As it looks like Robert has them middle initial 'C' it might narrow him down a bit

Eric and Leslie ended up in Liverpool (both dying there in the 1980s) and now Francis who also died in Warrington so looking forward there are a couple of Robert C Travis' that died in Liverpool that could be Dad. Trouble is its going backwards thats the problem  ;D

Hmmm.....

I think that letter 'C' might have just cracked it....

on the English 1911 there is a Robert Clayton Travis, engraver on wood, born Manchester living with 2 sons in Mossley Hill, Liverpool (Leslie Melling Travis ended up living in Mossley Hill with his wife) with a Mary Elizabeth Milling as a servant...worth a look  ???

Hi

Robert Clayton Travis 1875 - 1938 was my Great Grandfather.

His first wife was called Agnes Thompson or Thomson.  They had 3 boys Robert, William Clayton (my Grandad) and Clifford.  Agnes left Robert when the boys were very young, and went to live in Canada.  She only took the youngest boy Clifford. The eldest boy Robert died in the 1918 flu epidemic.

Robert Clayton Travis (1875-1938) then got together with the Housekeeper and they had Eric, Edna, leslie, and Frank.  I met the 3 men as a child in Liverpool.  My father adored his Uncles.

(My father Robert Clayton Travis 1932 - 2006 was named after his grandfather).

Robert Clayton Travis's (1875 - 1938), father was a woodcarver called William Travis (1850 - 1942) and he married Elizabeth Clayton - this is when the Clayton name started being used.

Just an add on - the housekeeper had been married before and came to live with Robert Clayton Travis as a housekeeper (after her divorce).  Maybe why she has different surnames.

We are not sure if they actually got married.  She died in the 1960s and my father often stayed with her (his step Granny) as a boy in Liverpool.
