Arthur Fredrick Hambling Questions
« on: Wednesday 10 September 14 13:08 BST (UK) »
Arthur Fredrick Hambling born 1879. At the age of twelve in the 1891 censes his occupation is a scholar and living at 87 Lancaster Road.

I would like to know.

1, Which school would he have attended.  Would there be records with such info as to how good he would have been.

2, How much would his parents have paid because they were not wealthy but they were not in poverty.

3, I know he joined Trinity House at the age of 19 in 1898. How do I find out what he did after his schooling and before he started at Trinity House, didn't children leave at the age of 13.

Thanks for looking.
Please scan photos at 300dpi or higher. Thank you.

Impossible to say as there would not be that type of info available between censuses

All children by then were supposed to go to school and would be shown as 'scholar' on the census.   Much like nowadays, he would have gone to the nearest local school and the parents wouldn't have had to pay.

He was, in fact, living at 1 Lancaster Road - number 87 is actually the no. of the schedule for the property.

Thanks for the help.

How do I find his local school. What info would I be able to find out about him.  I live in Mid Devon and don't drive, so I have know chance of ever getting to that part of the country.
Please scan photos at 300dpi or higher. Thank you.

I think your only hope here is to contact Norfolk Record Office to see if they can help you.   The information you seek is very specific but if anything exists they would know.

Old Maps   www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html

enter coordinates  652862  and   307147
when all maps loaded, click on 1885 Town Plans and when loaded in main window, click on main window to zoom.

Map shows a boys/girls school in Lancaster Road. No guarantee Arthur attended but you could use "Old Maps" to check for further schools in the locale.

If you google and search "Historical Directories of England and Wales" there is an item about Lancaster Road School in the "History and Gazetteer of Norfolk 1890" - page 949.
