Hi dfss, I don't have Caleb in my listing. Children of Francis I have are Ezra Francis b 1832, Esther 1820, Alfred 1821, Charlotte 1823, Jabez 1824, Martha 1826, Abijah 1827 Silas 1830, Isaac 1818. Their mother Hannah Beesley b abt 1798 at Blewbury.
The Martin name still survives in Salt Lake City courtesy of Ezra and several wives. If you have any other kids I've missed can you let me know please.Cheers Pete

Hello Pete...

No, no others at present......

But I should say that I only discovered that my mother was descended from this family this morning !

Thanks for Isaac who I didn't know about.

One strange thing.....
When I was a child my two Martin Great Aunts born 1892 and 1894 respectively showed me a letter I think written by Caleb (but I can't remember for sure) from Wales in the 1860s. The only marriage I can find for a Caleb Martin was that of December quarter 1856 in Crickhowell Wales....does this location ring any bells with you ?  Any religious, baptist, significanse perhaps ?

Best,
dfss

Don't know, IGI show him wed to Ann Noaks b1837 Reading. There is a marriage of a Caleb at Reading Jun 1854 to either Ann Elizabeth Newman or Louisa Heath

Have you checked any of the censuses for caleb in wales?

Hello Pete....

Thanks once again....

I'll check out the Caleb who got married in Reading....much more likely !....but it didn't come up when I looked on FreeBMD.

In the 1861 census Caleb claims to have been born in Wantage Berks, quite close to Blewbury...perhaps he family moved there for a while.

I'll only look at the Welsh censuses if the Reading link proves wrong. I just looked at the trekking references....especially as I noticed a "Martin Handcart Company" disaster. Hard times !

Many thanks,
dfss

WOW PETE !!!

Just looked at the Journal....extraordinary.....Thank you so much....I had no idea of this....nor, I think did my mother !

Extract from a book on  Blewbury.

In 1834 Francis Martin, the shoemaker, built a chapel in Westbrook Street.
This was for followers of the Particular Baptist persuasion and held 70.
Francis Martin was Deacon. It is said that Baptisms used to take place in a stream at the bottom of the garden.
