Aliment by Jean Blyth against William Wemyss 1790s
« on: Monday 01 December 14 07:29 GMT (UK) »
William Wemyss (son of John Wemyss and Rebecca Anderson) was born 20 Oct 1769 in West Wemyss Fife.

He had an illegitimate son called James Wemyss, b. 07 Aug 1793, West Wemyss Fife, d. 25 Nov 1841, West Wemyss Fife with a Jean Blyth.

Apparently there is an aliment case, how would I get a copy of this? What archive would I look in?
Would I be able to get Jean Blyth's parents names, her age?

Illegitimacy seems to be a big brickwall

Wondering if this is her,  Jean Blyth born 11 March 1769 to James Blyth and Agnes Ingles in Wemyss.

She may have had two sisters Mary Blyth born 18 Jul 1774 in Wemyss and Isabel Blyth born 20 Apr 1782 in Wemyss.

Then living in High Street Wemyss in 1841
Jean Blyth 70 Born Wemyss
Robert Anderson 60 labourer Born Wemyss

If there was an action for Aliment the records would be in the Commissary Court Records now held at the National Records of Scotland (unfortunately a search of the online catalogue for Wemyss or Blyth doesn't appear to show any records and searching on Aliment throws up over 48000 records)

http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/welcome.aspx

It is also possible that the action could have been raised by the Church against him as the Kirk would have been responsible for the administration of any Poor relief claimed - Poor Law records if they survive tend to be held at local archives.

Another option is to check the Kirk Session records which may be held at the NRS in Edinburgh - as the couple may have been called before the "Church Court"

or
Agnes Ingles born in 1753 to Andrew Ingles and Katherine Sympson at Wemyss (would be 16 years at marriage)
