unmarked burial Francis Murphy
« on: Saturday 19 July 14 10:18 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can someone advise me on how to go about looking for an unmarked grave.I have tried the usual roots but to no avail, but someone always knows somewhere else to look.
Francis Murphy was found drowned in the river Lee near Blackrock in Cork around June July 1897.
I have got the inquest report and newspaper cuttings but am desperate to find his burial place
He was a sailor just got off a boat berthed in the river from America,Any info however small will be greatly appreciated.

          many thanks
             Ann

Possibly depending on informant on death cert,if a relative possibly in family grave if one exists for that period,if not Coroner may have had to issue that some local council take responsibility or shipping co.
Sorry thats the best i could come up with.

Hi,

Francis could be buried in any cemetery in or around Cork City.

The best thing you could do first is to get his exact date of death.  On the cert it might list the hospital he may have been taken to after the accident if he in fact was taken to a hospital. Possibilities are the    South Infirmary or the Union Hospital.

The Union Hospital had it's own cemetery but there aren't any records available. The other strong possibility , I thought, was St. Josephs Cemetery , Tory Top Road Cork.     Their registers of burials are available online  at the  www.corkarchives.ie   I did go through the records for June & July 1897 and didn't find any Francis Murphy listed.   Is there any possibility that his body was repatriated to his homeland ( USA)?  If you scroll through the records you will see that some people
are buried in "Poor Ground" which would be a communal grave.

St. Michaels cemetery in Blackrock where the drowning occurred was not open in  1897.

Another option may have been St. Finbarrs Cemetery, Glasheen Road, Cork.   You could contact the Cork City Council cemeteries section  but you would have to have the approximate date of death.   This is the link to the Cork City Council site

http://www.corkcity.ie/services/recreationsport/cemeteries/

email address is      recreation [-- at --]corkcity.ie

If you live in Cork City you could visit the Cork City library and book a microfiche to go through the newspapers of the time to see if there is any reference to the drowning of Francis Murphy.

Some extracts from Old Irish newspapers are online but one that I often use only has December 1897 so no luck there.

Good luck with the search.

I have just seen you had this query up twice on the Cork Boards where you have already stated that you ruled out the Cork Archives & the Cork City library ( both suggested by myself) so
duplicated unfortunately.

Hi
Many thanks for this info will certainly be looking into this.
He lived in Newcastle upon Tyne UK with his wife and 2 children.Have searched everything there and he wasnt buried there.
So we thought  he must of been buried in Cork. Its a real mystery at the moment where hes buried and what he was doing sailing from America to Cork when he was stated as being a miner on his marriage certificate.

Hi Ann,

Have you any idea when Francis was born?    I found a death record for a Francis Murphy for
the quarter July-Sept 1897 in Cork.  He was aged 38 so born approximately 1859.   Could this be your Francis?  It certainly could be very helpful if you had the death cert.

It would be a lot of work for the library staff to go through two months of newspapers, although a lot of them have search engines.

I have applied for a birth certificate for Francis.

marriage certificate states he was 26yrs when he married January 1891 to an Elizabeth Carrick.
If i could have your email i will attach the paperwork i have on the drowning.
You may see it clearer with a new pair of eyes.
Thank you for replying to me.

Did Elizabeth receive a pension? or any money because of the death?
If he was a miner he could have been working on a steam ship.
