BORTHWICK/HOPE FAMILY TREE
« on: Friday 16 March 12 23:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find some information on Agnes Borthwick and William Hope, they may be my great great great grandparents.  If I am on the right track, they had a son Thomas Hope born 1825 in Jedburgh who is my great great grandfather, he married Janet Turnbull and I have just found out some information regarding them, when they came to South Australia (where I live) etc. The Agnes I have found was born circa 1785 in Jedburgh, her parents could be George Borthwick and Alice Renwick. William was born circa 1780 in Jedburgh, William's parents could be Thomas Hope and Sofia Henderson.  I am really floundering at the moment regarding Agnes and William. Hoping someone can help me it would be much appreciated.
Thanking you.

Hi

It does look as if your Thomas was the last of the large family of William HOPE and Agnes BORTHWICK. I can't find a marriage for the pair, but their children were:
William chr 23.12.1805, George chr 8.3.1807, Alison chr 8.7.1808, Adam chr 24.1.1810, Isabella chr 5.11.1811, Agnes chr 1.12.1813, Francis chr 28.7.1815, Jessie chr 5.4.1818, John chr 25.1.1820, Robert chr 28.11.1824 and your Thomas chr 28.1.1826

I would agree that Agnes' likely parents are George Borthwick and Alice/Alison RENWICK.Siblings for Agnes are William chr 8.4.1776, Janet chr 16.12.1781 and John chr 10.11.1789.
The names William, John, George, Alison and Janet (in its diminutive Jessie) all appear among the children of William and Agnes.
However, I would be less certain that William's parents are Thomas Hope and Sofia HENDERSON, as the name Thomas is only used for the eleventh child, and the name Sofia doesn't appear at all.

Hi Ros

It looks like this could be your William and some of his family in 1841:

http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/41transcript.aspx?houseid=79204003

(He seems fairly clueless about ages, but that's not uncommon!)

The William in this household gives his birthplace as England, which of course may not be many miles away, but still not very helpful. If only he had lived until 1851.....

Hello

It has been awhile since I have worked on this side of my family. But just wondering if anyone could give me information on Agnes Borthwick's parents, George Borthwick and Alice Renwick?  I am not sure but think that Alice's mother could have been Janet Hendry, the name Hendry comes up in the family as a second name in the late 1800s.

Thanks Ros
