Donald Williamson - Waterloo Medal holder
« on: Thursday 25 July 13 21:26 BST (UK) »
Seeking information on Donald Williamson born P. of Cromarty about 1786. Served in 79th Foot. Awarded Waterloo Medal. Discharged in 1825 and went to live in E(a)thie, P. of Rosemarkie with his foreign-born wife Florentine Calpine. One daughter, Mary, born 1826. Florentine was still in Ethie in 1841 but not Donald, and she had obviously died by 1851. Any information on dates of their deaths would be welcome.

Familysearch has her as Florintine Colpine and daughter Mary's birth and christening as September 1828 @ Rosemarkie.  Do you have other evidence that these transcriptions are wrong?

Freecen has her transcribed as Florentius overseas foreign born aged between 40 and under 45 with Mary b Ross and Cromarty aged 12 living at Ethie, Rosemarkie, R&C.

Have you traced Mary through all census? That might help with establishing a year of death for her mother and/or father by giving a rounder picture.

I am aware of the various versions of Mary's mother's names in the 1841 Census and on Mary's B,M and D entries, and the equally various versions produced by transcribers. LIBINDX has yet another. Which one is "correct" is difficult to say. You are right about Mary's birth being in 1828, not 1826. That was my own transcription error. It is her parent's dates of death that I am looking for. They are not included in the on-line listing of Rosemarkie MI's. I have traced Mary through the Censuses up to her death in 1913 and these give no indication of them. Thanks for your response. On line MIs won't help if they couldn't afford a stone.  I'd try burial records for a fuller search, though one would have thought they would be transcribed into Scotlandspeople databases (however that does depend on what spelling was used!)

That site will be useful, I'm sure, but I didn't find the right Donald Williamson on it. I guess you're correct to say they probably couldn't afford a stone. Many thanks for your help. Alastair MacDonald

Thanks for the response. Good to hear from you.
My interest in Donald Williamson is through his daughter Mary's marriage to William Cant, who is a distant relative of mine. In the 1851 Census Mary is a servant at Hazlebank, Pluscarden, Parish of Elgin to James Cant, his wife Mary Calder and their unmarried youngest son William Cant. James died in 1855, Mary Calder in 1857 and in 1858 William Cant married Mary Williamson. They had four children, all girls. If you knew this already I apologise for repeating it.
I have a copy of Donald's discharge papers, giving details of his military service. If you would like me to send them please PM your email address to me and I will do so.
Regards, Alastair.

It has been a while since the last post but I have just discovered this site.  I am directly related to Donald Williamson through his son - also Donald - and I guess that we both have information that would be of interest.
