« on: Wednesday 12 November 14 00:18 GMT (UK) »
Dear all,

All my Googling efforts are bringing up "Dog Leap Stairs" in Newcastle, but I know there was also one in South Shields and that is the one that I am trying to locate. Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
Westoe

Leap Stairs are shown on the 1:500 Town Plan at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=435970,567727 In the 1881 census Dog Leap Stairs are between 64 & 74 Wapping Street. Half Moon Stairs shown on the map are between 50 & 62 Wapping Street. RG11 Piece 5020 Folio 67 Page 21

hi,

southtynesideimages .org.uk      have old photographs of Wapping street, which may give you an idea of housing etc. It is likely that there would be access to housing from the sides of the steps as they descended to the river.

Thank you stanmapstone and taffie01 for your help. That is exactly what I need.

Now, another (related) query - Would Half Moon Quay have extended from the foot of the Half Moon Stairs that Stan refers to?

Cheers,
Westoe

Ah ... thought it might be, but not being local, had to ask. Thank you again, Stan.
