I'll check that now! I have been all through Poplar looking for her. Found other family members in marriages and 1901 but not her. :)
Emma died just before census in 1901, I think.

Here's something interesting on FIBIS - Emma's application for a widow's pension at age 60, confirming that the marriage took place in Manchester in 1852. Also a date for Richard's death in 1886. http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_detail.php?id=795216

That's good re the Manchester marriage too so there is a real question re Emma's maiden name.

Some more from the Australian branch of the family - a very recent query:

Perhaps Quentin is from that extended family too.

Now that query has the Carlton name - wonder where Brodie comes from.

Gday all,

You guys are marvellous - thanks for your help again :)
I've added those new details to my tree.

The request in Ireland Reaching Out was indeed from a relative of mine who is seeking more details.
It's on his behalf that I asked here actually ...

I note that he has the 'Carlton' name for Emma too, not sure where he got that from.
I struck out looking for 'Emma Carlton' or 'Emma Caltion', but I had a hit with 'Emma Furlong' with her father John Smith Furlong (odd name.)

So still not sure on the maiden name issue.

Regards,

Quentin

Hi Quentin,
Perhaps the relative is thinking that Carlton is a middle name and got it from those baptisms.
However, she married in that strange name of Caltion both in church register and the civil indexes. Catholic baptism records generally show the maiden name. That could also be accent but the signature is that too.
In the marriage record she also shows Benjamin as her father.
Now there may be some truth in the family story but it is difficult after all this time to establish what that is  ;)
She could have even given a false name and then stuck by it for the rest of her life- for registering her children but then presumably Minnie's birth certificate would show the name and the information seems to come from her.
I have wondered if there is a legal index of names to check the story re judge or barrister as on the certificate. Again, though, I have to say, is that an invented story, perhaps?
Shaun has some great research though with Richard for you.

Heywood  :)

John Smith Furlong was a Dublin QC, born Dublin circa 1781/2, died at his home in Leeson Street in February 1846. I haven't found any record of a marriage or children.

I am wondering what evidence the family has that Emma's maiden name was Furlong. Has anyone checked birth certificates for the UK-born children?

I'm sure this won't be new to the family  - a 1935 news article about Minnie and her recollections of India http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/58755214
