Title: Search for census entry using GROS data
Post by: Salvia on Saturday 12 March 11 21:18 GMT (UK)
I'm searching for someone on Scotland'sPeople where I already have the transcription from A******y, but with no luck.  I've tried entering the GROS numbers but that doesn't work.  Its the 1881 Census and the Registration number is 168/2, ED14, Household schedule 75, Line 12.  Does anyone know the exact arrangement of numbers needed?  My relative is Mary Gordon, aged 22, living in Old Machar, Aberdeen City.

I would be grateful for any assistance.

Hi Salvia

I think I'm missing something here.   :)

If you already have the transcription, what are you trying to find on Scotland's People?

If you want to see the actual entry, put in the census year, the name, age, and Aberdeen. It should then come up with the right page. Old Machar was the outer area of Aberdeen, as opposed to St Nicholas, the inner part.

Are your Stotts from Fyvie?

Graham.

I would like to see the actual image, Ancestry don't supply them.

Graham - I can't find her using her name.  I can get a page of Gordons in Old Machar, aged 22, but no Mary and no entry with the right GROS number.  There must be a way of entering the GROS numbers (with the advanced search) to find someone.  I shall keep trying, but maybe I shall have to contact them.

Thank you for your help.

My Stotts are from Midmar.

Hi Salvia

There is no way to search on SP using the GROS data and whilst there are many Mary Gordon in Old Machar none are 22 according to SP. Try searching for Helen Scott age 20. She is on the line before Mary and SP has a match. You can get to the image that way.

Thank you Andy, why didn't I think of that.   >:(

There is a box under Advanced Search for the GROS data, you'd think it would have some use!

Thank you everyone.

Well that was worth it!  I found her by searching for Helen Scott, and it turns out that Helen Scott came from Fettercairn where Mary Gordon's future husband came from.  She must have been introduced by Helen :D

So thank you again Andy.

Hi Salvia

I found her by just putting in her name and address, no age.  Sometimes less is better with these things

Hi Salvia

I just found that GROS data box (never seen it before) and experimented using a 1881 Census GROS ref I have from the index for one of my SP images and compared with Ancestry. I can see what I need to enter but cannot get a match no matter how I try. I must look though SP sometime to see if I can fathom it out.

Does the image clearly match Ancestry? Presumably the fact there wasn't a match on SP suggests that there is a variation in transcriptions.

I'm still a bit puzzled over this. Its probably because I was trying to narrow it down and not to spend too many credits!  Must be my Scottish ancestry!  I do wish SP would have subscriptions available.

These are the help notes from SP regarding GROS references for the censuses http://ww1.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&625

Thanks for that Monica.

The trouble I had was that the box would only accept a certain number of digets and I couldn't fathom out which 0s, /s or spaces to leave out!

Still, with everyone's help I got there in the end.   :)
