Draffan Family Darlington Help Photo Gravestone
« on: Saturday 06 December 14 22:49 GMT (UK) »
Would there be anyone living in Darlington who might be able to take a photograph of a headstone for us?

The family on this stone appear to be the ancestors of a Draffan now in New South Wales - http://www2.thisisthenortheast.co.uk/clients/Cemeteries/details.asp?UID=4296   There is also a link to my own Draffan line from Douglas.    Many Thanks, Malcolm

Thank you so much for offering, OldHippyone.     It comes up as Darlington West Cemetery and is No. 33 in Row 11 in Section D

I'm now in contact with another descendant of this family and this will no doubt bring a smile to the face of Merry Draffan.    Cheers Malcolm

Thank you anyway and also for letting me know about the other Draffan burials.   I must have driven past Darlington so many times in the early 1970's when my parents were still alive and retired to Scarborough, but I have to confess I never saw the town.   In the 1940's the express from Kings X to Newcastle sometimes stopped there after York, but again it was only a name on the side of the train.   It was a long journey in those days and I can remember the express once taking 12 hours, due to shunting into sidings during air raids.    Thanks too for the tip.   Cheers Malcolm

Thanks again, Old Hippy One.   Actually it was George Williamson Draffan who died August 1936. and he has turned out to be the Cuckoo in the nest.    There was no record of his birth in 1879 and Charles in Scotland set us on the right road.    Charles runs this fantastic site on Scottish families - http://www.chouston.f2s.com/     If you have a Scots ancestor then chances are you will find some mention of them here.

Charles found that it was really a Jane Draffan in Lanarkshire who married a John Williamson in Douglas in 1872.   Jane was the daughter of the Darlington Thomas Draffan and sister of the Darlington William Draffan.     She pops up in 1881 in Kirkdale Liverpool as was found earlier in this discussion with three sons, still married but no sign of her husband.    Then in 1891 G W is with his Uncle William in Darlington.

Many thanks for your interest, Oldhippyone.       Malcolm
