What is the context of the reference?

Stephanie Bidmead's Malta genealogy site has this marriage:

"HURTER, Amelia Marianna, daughter of J.Christopher Hurter, merchant, married 1st October 1827 to

TERRY, Thomas or Robert, Town Major, Army."

http://website.lineone.net/~stephaniebidmead/chaplains.htm

Major Robert Terry is listed as Town Adjutant in Malta in this 1827 Army List http://tinyurl.com/oxfhx6k

Per his 1869 obituary, Robert Terry left two sons, both captains in the army (9th and 25th foot)

According to the 1867 Army List Lt Colonel B C Mitford (unattached) is Town Major in Malta. The 1871 list does not list a Town Major. One concern is that I have checked a few Army Lists from the 1860s and an officer called Thomas Terry is not listed. You would expect him to be listed if he was to make Town Major by 1870. But you need to find a 1870 list.

1st Battalion is incorrect in your information as the Town Major was on the Governor/Commander in Chief's staff, so were not part of a regiment.

Ken

Clearly different men when referring to a "Terry" in the early 1820s and a "Terry" iin the 1870s.

However, you originally asked ".... what this means, Thomas Terry 1st Batt Malta Town Major". My response was attempting to explain the Town Major aspect.

Re "Lt Colonel B C Mitford", several newspapers reported March 1870 under the heading "Brevet"-

"Major and Brevet Colonel Bertam C Mitford, retired upon full pay, from half pay late of the 11th Foot, and Town Major Malta, to have honorary rank of Colonel"
