Hi Romilly

You might want to keep an eye on this COFEPOW  index
http://www.cofepowdb.org.uk/cdb/Index.jsp

Fingers crossed your Uncle could turn up on it, they still have a long way to go but I was amazed to find my fathers liberation papers already there. ;D

All the best

Thanks for the Link Maddie.

I've just had a search, but can't find my late Uncle on there. I am beginning to doubt that he was actually a POW...there's nothing to indicate that he was on his WW2 Medal List entry...

I think my best best is to try and track down his Merchant Navy Service Record at Kew...and see what that says.

Cheers, Romilly.

Hi Romilly
If you e mail the Thailand Burma Railway Center in Kanchanaburi, Thailand
http://www.tbrconline.com/contact.htm
they will be able to tell you if your late uncle worked on the railway.
Their database is very comprehensive. They were able to find info for me
when the National Archives couldn't.

Hi Trevor,

Many thanks for looking.

Yes, - that's him. Ancestry have mistranscribed the 'Rencella' as 'Revella'(!)

Thanks for the tip, - I think that Seaweed has already looked for him for me, - & said that I need to obtain Ernest's Form CR10.

I have already found his WW2 Medal Roll on the National Archives Site and downloaded it. It shows that he got the Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Italy Star and War Medal. What it doesn't say is whether he was a POW or not...

Cheers, Romilly.

I have now had a reply from the Centre in Thailand, which says:

'I have checked our Data Base for records on your late Uncle and the only
Wilson that I have found in the British Navy is Ernest Wilson who was
captured from the HMS Tapah and spent the war in Sumatra at Palembang.
Could this be your Uncle' ?

I'm wondering how I can proceed further... Does anyone on here know where I can obtain either the Crew List for HMS Tapah, - or the List of POW's held at Palembang?

Cheers, Romilly.
