Stanaway-Olympian
« on: Friday 17 October 14 23:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out the full name of J.J. Stanaway who competed in the 1904 Olympics representing New Zealand. I am attaching a newspaper article where he is mentioned. He must be related to "the" J.J. Stanaway (John James) but I don't have anyone in my tree who fits the time period. Thanks for considering my question.

There is a John James Stanaway born 28 November 1872  in NZ. Died 1954. Could this be him? He is connected to the earlier John James Stanaway. If it is him just Google his name and the Hotten family website has lots of details.

Hi

Just to correct the date of death it was 1930. If you look in NZ Past Papers there are obituaries for him in the Auckland star and the NZ Herald. It certainly looks like he is your man.

Thank you Pam and Janette! This must be him and he would be the grandson of John James Stanaway, the mariner. With your help I was able to find a short description of John and his brother Alex in the book 100 Years: Māori Rugby League, 1908-2008. It looks like they both played rugby and were very sporty. I think I have a photo of either John or Alex that we found in a frame behind a photo of one of my great parents. Thanks again for all of your help!
