Hi All

I located Sarah Lucy Vaughan's birth as 25 Dec 1848 however she was baptised 8 Apr 1855 at St Giles Cripplegate.  The baptism notes Thomas and Elizabeth were formerly of Ross Herfordshire.  He was a grocer.

Thus it seems probable Sarah was born in Ross and not baptised in Ross.  I had wondered if the family had been Quakers as Robert was born a Quaker and buried in Quaker grounds despite marrying out but I was not able to locate Sarah.

I am at a loss to know who is Violet Lucy James spinster administrator of Sarah L James effects.  However I havent completed researching all of Robert's siblings to know if one of his brothers had a daughter Violet.

Most curious

Hard to find without her birthplace - which was Ross, Herefordshire according to the 1871 census.  Is that consistent with what you know of her?

1871: RG10/288/18/29.
AVM228 - do you have a physical address for her in 1871 please?

I have not quite worked out the link between the Derrick and Vaughan families - perhaps the Emma Vaughan shown in 1871 was a stepmother (formal or informal) to Sarah Lucy.

1855 (8 Apr): The St Giles Cripplegate baptism shows Emma Lucy Derrick b 4 Jan 1855 baptised at the same time as Sarah Lucy Vaughan b 25 Dec 1848.  Emma's parents were Frederick and Elizabeth (nee Howell I think - married in Islington in 1852).

1861: shows "Lucy" Vaughan (12 b Ross, Herefordshire) and Emma Derrick (6 b London) at the same school in Guildford.  RG9/428/34/13.

Emma DERRICK was born 6 Aug 1820 and baptised at Holborn 20 Aug 1820 to Simeon (a grocer) & Ann, of Lamb's Conduit Passage.  (It seems Frederick, father of Emma Lucy b 1855, was her brother, baptised at St Clement Danes on 17 May 1818).

She married 11 Aug 1849 in Islington to James Whitworth VAUGHAN of 4 Shepperton Cottages, father John VAUGHAN, Gent.

Still haven't worked out how the 1871 relationships work.

And you are very kind - thankyou!  But this is a puzzler.  Unfortunately the 1861 census for Islington East (which I think would cover Shepperton Cottages) does not survive.

Emma Vaughan is with "Lucy" and Violet James in 1881, enumerated as Lucy's mother.
