Gilbert HUNT of Ashbourne 1600s
« on: Friday 14 February 14 15:30 GMT (UK) »
Gilbert is my 7 x gt grandfather and I have found a baptism record on Freereg and Anc*****  which both say that he was baptised 22/10/1697 at St Oswald, Ashbourne but was born in 1662.  If this birth date is correct then I am pretty sure that it could be "my" Gibert, however I hope that someone could clarify the circumstances.
The correct Gilbert married Mary BROUGH in Nottingham 8/5/1697 so the baptism would be a few months after this.  Can that be so or am I up the wrong tree?

Any help or thoughts will be much appreciated, thank you.

NC.

According to FS, the Gilbert Hunt baptised on 22 Oct 1697 was b. 1662 ...

Thanks STG, I'll consider sending for the image, but before that I am still wondering why someone would be baptised at the age of 35 after a C of E marriage ceremony at a different Church.  It's that part of the puzzle that makes me query whether it is my Gilbert.
Any ideas?

- over-zealous vicar?
- related to him wanting a possible position (verger, church warden etc) in the church and not being able to prove he'd already been baptised?
- or a slip of the tongue re the above and the vicar pounced?
- something to do with the birth/baptism (or upcoming) birth/baptism of a child?
- something considered to be not quite right with his previous baptism, maybe non-conformist and, therefore, not recognised?
- he "found" God?

Could be any number of reasons, really, I suppose.

PS : Feel as if I've really rambled here! Sorry.

From one rambler to another - feel free!
Any of those reasons sound feasible, funnily enough he was married at St Mary's Nottingham but his son was baptised at Nottingham Presbetarian Church/Chapel.  Maybe he was somehow at odds with his religious beliefs.
I find it's always good to run these things past someone else with different ideas.  I thank you for your input.
