Hello Kathy,

You have given no dates and there is more than one Francis Robert Jackson. Have you looked at the Irish Census? Here is 1901 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kildare/Kilkea/Kilkea_Upper/1434279/

You can see a father and son of that name. Is that any help?

That house is a large house and FRJ is the landholder of that and others if you look at the other census documents. There are images and references to the house if you browse the internet, including it seems, that Ernest Shackleton was born there!

Regards
Heywood

Thank you and I do know that there was a father and son with both the same names. I mainly wanted to know i guess how to find out if they were just caretakers as i had found something that made them sound like they were into business in Athy like on Leinster St.??

thank you all for your response.

kathy

The census gives their occupations and also shows that Francis snr (presumably) was the owner of that and other properties.
In 1901, Francis is a Shopkeeper and farmer and 3 sons are shop assistants. Is that the time frame you are thinking of?

Slaters directory 1881 shows Francis in Leinster Street in 1881
It also shows Henry Shackleton, Farmer Kilkea division, Athy Union.

Yes, I do have a little but like I said I didn't think they were just caretakers but that is what another family has replied that they were just caretakers and they weren't oh how do it say it like they were not like wealthy??? I kind of assumed maybe not wealthy  but kind of to do?? I know there were several children the son Francis Robert married a St. Johns and she lived with an uncle and they were watch makers but not a lot of info. just hitting bricks. the youngest girl was a Grace Kingsmill Jackson and she lived at Kilkea House?? A sister Annie Kathleen married a (I think) John Nassau Greene.

would just like to get them all straight as my grandma would never speak of her family other than we knew about Kilkea House and she had an Aunt Lillian and she is the one who married Francis Robert Jackson Sr.

Thanks, kathy

As I said the census shows their status.

Francis snr left a substantial amount of money http://www.willcalendars.nationalarchives.ie/search/cwa/details.jsp?id=1639555368 click on 'image'
