Young/Stewart families of Ballynameen
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 06:24 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace Irish descendants of Robert Young and Agnes (Nancy) Stewart form Ballynameen, Garvagh. Of their children I know that John Young (born 1861) and Robert (1867) emigrated to New Zealand in 1884. Of the other known children in the family, Agnes and Willie died young, and George, Mary and Annie did not marry. Tom and Jane remained in Ireland and married (but I don't know who they married.) I was wondering if anyone knew of their descendants. John Young was my great-grandfather.

Thanks for this - it's more information than I currently have. According to my grandmother, Jane married someone that the family did not approve of, so they had nothing more to do with her. John B. Young (my great grandfather) was born on 12.7.1861 and died in 1907. His younger brother Bob was born in 1867. These 2 brothers emigrated to New Zealand to try to make their fortunes in the Otago goldrush. John married Henrietta Matilda Barker and Bob married a girl named Mary. Are you related to the Youngs? You seem to have quite a lot of information.

Interesting! Looks as if the information my grandmother had was slightly incorrect. Thanks.

Robert Young was my great grandfather, too. He died 7th June 1941 in Matamata, New Zealand. He married Mary McPhee in Pembroke (Wanaka) on 10th November 1892. They have left lots of descendants.

Yes, I had heard about the family at Matamata. My grandmother knew most of the family - Robert Young was referred to as Big Uncle Bob. I have Robert and Mary's children as Beatrice, William, Mary (Mamie), Robert (Robyn), John and Henrietta and have some of Robyn and John's descendants but I don't have a Murray anywhere so I'm curious as to where you fit into the family picture.

Mary (Mamie) was my maternal grandmother. She married John (Jack) McMiken. Their children were William (named after Mary's brother who was killed in France 21 Feb 1917), Mary, Eileen (my mother) Robert (Bob - still alive) and Jean (still alive). Mum married Brian Murray and I am the eldest of eight, Bill married Doris Finn and they had six children, and Bob married Joan Young ( until then no relation) and they had four girls. Mary and Jean never married.
