Tarrant Monkton
« on: Saturday 22 March 14 11:21 GMT (UK) »
My ancestors Richard Warr and Eleanor Allner were married in Tarrant Monkton in 1717. The original register entry  (on Ancestry) says that she is "of G.L.". There are several other nearby entries with "of G.L." can anyone suggest which parish this is?

HI!
I wonder if GL is a mis- transcription? The records for Tarrant Launceston , the adjacent parish, were kept at Tarrant Monkton...could the GL have been TL?

There are also entries for "of T.M." and "of T.L.", so I think that eliminates the Tarrants. It is certainly
"G" followed by probably "L" or possibly "S".

Thanks. I have had a look at all of the Gussages with no success. I am now certain that it is "of G.L."
as the L  is the same as the L in "of T.L." (Tarrant Launceston). Between 1715 and 1717 "of G.L." appears 9 times and "of G.M." twice, so presumably they must be nearby.

Hi,
G.L. is likely to be Tarrant Gunville.  Locally all Tarrants are referred to by the second word of their name ie. Monkton, Rushton, Rawston, Keyneston, Gunville etc. Everyone would know that they were really Tarrant Monkton etc. So G.L is probably referring to Gunville which is not so far from Tarrant Monkton.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately the registers for Gunville on Ancestry do not start until 1750, so it looks like another trip to Dorset.

Hi,

Have you tried the Dorset OPC site for Tarrant Gunville records?

Many thanks, but I did look at this and they do not start until 1719, which is still not early enough.
