Just found Annie and son Thomas in 1920 Springfield Ward 1, Hampden (names were mistranscribed, I'll leave as is):

Frank Geer 53
Anne Mcdermace 48, servant, widowed, b. Scotland
Thomas Mcdermace 9, boarder, b. Mass.

Annie shows as arriving in 1894 on this census entry...time can confuse events though...

Sancti, those look good possibilities for nephew William. Will be hard to confirm 100% without finding that marriage entry and parents' details for James and Anne. I saw this 1901 entry for example, but all just possibilities for now:

James Mcdermott 28 b. vanman, Ireland
Annie Mcdermott 28 b. Glasgow
Catherine Mcdermott 1
Annie Mcdermott Under 1month

Address: 64 Stevenson St, Glasgow Calton

Might be good to get some help from our American RootsChat friends! I am not used to reading the US directories and these and other info may help.

For example, from the Springfield 1941 directory, I can see this entry:

McDermott Ann M, wid James T. r 20 Worcester av.

Gosh, US directories can be informative! Just working through years either side of this. MsKitka, did your gran die in the 1940s? The 1942-3 directory shows:

McDermott, Anne M., widow of James T. died 5 October 1942, aged 68.

Not sure what info is contained on Mass vital stats for this period...Would they have parents' details for the deceased and info of this nature?

There is an English marriage for

Annie Meiklejohn   Jul-Aug-Sep 1910 Barton upon Irwell Lancashire

Any sign of James and Ann on 1910 census in America?

Any sign of them on passenger records pre 1912 when Thomas was born?

There is an English marriage for

Annie Meiklejohn   Jul-Aug-Sep 1910 Barton upon Irwell Lancashire

This Annie looks to have either married a James Flitcroft or a John Seddon unfortunately.

I have tried hard to find them in either 1910 or on shipping manifests - together or separate and with Ann* possibly as Meiklejohn, but nothing as yet of any confidence to work with unfortunately.

So far, that we have:

1912 birth entry for Thomas
1920 and 1930 census for Annie with son Thomas
Directories for Annie through the 1930s to 1942/3 and her possible death

And then, hopefully, the right crossing for William McDermott in 1927 with a wife Catherine (also hopefully Campbell from what you and Ev have looked at).

You have listed the details of that Campell/McDermott marriage in 1914 and this William with family in earlier censuses.

We need more new info now to move on  ;D

MsKitka, did your father mention any other siblings who may have died before 1920?

He was sent home from Massachusetts in 1912 because he had consumption and the doctors thought returning to his birth land would aid in his recovery. ...He was on a ship headed for Liverpool according to his last correspondence and then a note from family to say that he had passed.

Can we talk a little about his last correspondence..Have you seen this together with the note from his family informing Annie of his death?

There is a possible death for Catherine (Kate)

1978 MCDERMOTT CATHERINE Not Permissible CAMPBELL Female aged 88 registered at GLASGOW (MARTHA ST) GLASGOW CITY

It is too recent and can't be viewed online

Viewing the marriage of William and Catherine Campbell will not clear up the mystery of James' parents as William's father is James' brother.

Have you searched for a death in the U.S. for James?

Have you thought of asking American rootschatters for help?

Hello my old friends on the other side of the pond ... It has been a long time due to some serious upheaval in my life but, I want to thank all of you for your help and support, something I should have done 2 + years ago.  I guess better late than never if your still out there.  Want to get back on the roots as time allows but needed to say "Thank You" again for your hard work in the mysteries that abound in my family. Hope all is well for you in your end.
