Not sure if this may have any relevance, but noting now just in case:

A 39 yr old William McDermott arrived in NY on 4 September 1927 on the Caledonia. His next of kin back in Scotland was his wife, Catherine McDermott living at 658 Govan Road, Glasgow. He gave his aunt as contact in the US, Ann McDermott 22 1/2 Greenwood Street, Springfield, Mass. His intention was to remain in the US.

There are a couple of possibilities for an Ann McDermott living in Springfield in the 1930 census, both showing as widows and Scottish born. However, this one shows as living in Greenwood Street, Springfield in 1930:

Ann Mcdermott 56, widow b. Scotland
Thomas Mcdermott 17, born Mass.

The marriage that Ev mentioned earlier took place in

1914 MCDERMOTT WILLIAM and CAMPBELL CATHERINE at GOVAN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK

Which might link well with the passenger info from Monica

God love you Monica, you did it! Thomas is my father and Anne (Scots Annie as everyone in Massachusetts use to refer to her) was my Grandmother.  She died long before I was born and is buried in Massachusetts. My dad made it into the next century as he had hoped.  My grandfather is the real mystery. He was sent home from Massachusetts in 1912 because he had consumption and the doctors thought returning to his birth land would aid in his recovery.  I have no info on his or my grandmothers birth (or his death dates) and have spent years working this from many angles.  He was on a ship headed for Liverpool according to his last correspondence and then a note from family to say that he had passed.  Was hoping through William to find more information on his roots.  Again, my sincere thanks! :-*

I hope I have this right.

James and Ann(Meiklejohn) McDermott were living in the US in 1912

James was sent home 1912 and died in UK

William McDermott came to US and gave his AUNT Ann as his visiting address

Your father Thomas died 2000 and his parents were James McDermott and Ann Meiklejohn

Have you checked for a marriage in US?

Sancti, you have it right!  I have checked marriage, death, ship registers. Unfortunately, my Gram was very emotional and cried often when my Dad asked questions being a widow, alone in the US and away from her family.  No one took much interest in the past until, I came along asking more questions then they could ever answer ... lol ... I have been putting together a family tree for my children and love to research.  Just found the RootsChat.com and thought, great another connection across the pond.  You folks proved to be GREAT!   :)
