Miss Mac,  what makes you think that they weren't cremated?

Skoosh.

To be honest I don't know for sure that they weren't, but I have always heard from my grandmother that they were buried at some cemetery in Glasgow that is now gone because they built a highway over it (or something like that.) I'm not sure if that's true. That's why I want to find out where they might have been buried. There has never been any tradition of cremation in our family either that I know of.

I'm from Norway, so there is little I can do other than to search the web for clues and unfortunately burials seems to be a tricky one :)

That would be the Old Anderston Burial Ground which was in the vicinity of Argyle Sreet. I think the bodies were exhumed and buried elsewhere due to the re-development.
Your best bet is the Mitchell Library. http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/index.php

If it was the Anderston Burial Ground (North Street) then this reply to a similar query in another forum may help

Anderston Burial Grounds were closed by Sheriffs Order to make way for the development of the M8 extension in Glasgow in the 1960’s. All the remains were exhumed and removed to the Linn cemetery and were re interred in Section 26 (and possibly 22), however the remains were not indexed but all the remains were removed. The archive records for the Anderston Burial Grounds are held in The Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow to whom further enquiry can be made.

Very interesting. If they were indeed buried at Anderston (like it seems very likely they were by the replies in this thread and the stories I've heard from my family), we might still be able to "find" them, indexed or not. Thank you! :)

Oh wow! Thank you :) That would be of great help if you could find anything at all relating to them while you are there. Good luck! And good night.

Hi Miss Mac

as promised had a word with archive staff at the Mitchell today, sadly the records for burials only go up to 1916/17 for Anderston. As Falkyrn says the the grounds were closed around 1967 for the new M8 motorway and the remains removed to Linn Cemetery. It seems no records survived the move and none were kept at Linn for the re-burials.

I will PM you later this evening..

Their address was 838 Argyle Street. I have no idea "where" on Argyle Street that is.

Is there a website where one can do a general search of the content in the newspapers, instead of having to read the entire pages of death notices in every newspaper? I don't know what paper that's most likely to have their deaths listed. I'm guessing there was more than one newspaper in Glasgow in the 1950's?

If anyone is more experiences with these searches than me:

Margaret Leishman Adam - died 20 December 1952, Glasgow Western Infirmary.

John Cameron - died 18 December 1960, Glasgow Western Infirmary.

Hmm. What's up? Is my computer is messing with me since I can only see my own post re-quoted as the recent activity? Haha :)
