Can Anyone Identify Coat of Arms in Monknewtown Cemetery, Slane ?
« on: Wednesday 26 June 13 17:51 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help identify what family might own the arms in the attached photo of a ruined wall in Monknewtown cemetery near Slane County Meath ? It is in the form of a sheild, on which are three fish ( possibly Salmon ) facing left ?

This would normally indicate the Roach (Roche) family.

What is this?  ??? Is it a memorial niche in a wall for a cremation urn? If so, would church burial records even include something like this, I don't know, perhaps someone else might...

Good evening,

Roach is the only one like this trhat I can find; http://www.houseofnames.com/product/Family+Crest+Image+%28JPG%29+Heritage+Series+-+300+DPI

I have looked at several other fishy names but not the same, there are thousands of names on this site. Needle and haystack come to mind.

This website suggests Roche family:

And, much as I dislike commercial "Coats-of-Arms" companies, have a look here:

Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thank you all for your illuminating replies. I was visiting the cemetery researching some very informative tombstones relating to the Marry family ( linked to my mothers family tree) and when I saw the very old looking Crest I put the question up out of pure curiosity. What I was not expecting was "Roche" figuring in the replies, as that name crops up generations back in my fathers side of the family tree, and in the parish of Rathkenny, which used to include Monknewtown at one time I believe.

Looks like I now have lots of digging to do on the Roche side.

On the comment about the niche in the wall under it I assumed it looked more like a Holy Water Font  than anything else, and I dont think Medieval Catholic Church was in any way involved in cremation or cremation urns, but .... who  knows

Its possible that two separate families used the same/very similar coat of arms in different parts of the UK and Ireland, so it can sometimes be difficult to be sure. Unfortunately with a stone carving its impossible to tell what colour it is, which can make all the difference!

There seems to have been a family called "Welch" which used the same pattern, but that doesn't mean its definitely that family in this case. You can see a bit about that coat here. http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~walsh/crest.html

Welch and Walsh is a very common name and represents a large variety of unrelated families with a large array of different coats, but I notice that there was a "Welch" family (as opposed to the more common Walsh) in the general area and are buried in the 1700s in the Hill of Slane graveyard:
http://www.slanehistoricalsociety.com/index.php/headstone-inscriptions/19-hill-of-slane

The 1659 Census (which doesn't cover the Slane barony) suggests the Welch name was fairly plentiful in the county back then.

Don't think you can say for sure, but hopefully between this and the Roche and other few leads above there might be something to go on!

As for the monument itself, by the look of the mortar work it looks like it was put together in the last 20 years or so, probably using stonework already on site.
