Henry Shepherd and Mary Ann Walker
« on: Friday 30 May 14 08:57 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have just got the birth certificate of my GGGrandmother Lavinia Burton nee Shepherd.
It has been confusing up to this point because her parents were listed as Henry and Mary Ann Shepherd living in Lenton and there appears to be another family living in the same place with parents with the same names and same ages!
According to the GRO, Lavinia was entered twice into the registers but the certificate they sent says her father was Henry Shepherd a lace maker (born abt 1829 in Nottingham on the census) and her mother was Mary Ann Walker born abt 1835 also in Nottingham. They are registered as living at Clifton Street Lenton.
I was just wondering if anyone could confirm on the 1861 census whether there is a Henry and Mary Shepherd living at this address as I don't have the family in this census.
Also I'm having difficulty finding Henry and Mary Ann's marriage if anyone could help I would be most grateful.
Thanks.

That's great thanks lizdb!
I have found on Freebmd a Henry Shepherd and a Mary Ann Walker in 1849 in the same register who married although it does not specifically state to each other, could this be them?
Based on the age Mary Ann gives in different census that would make her between 15-17 when she married. It would make sense as their son Samuel was born 1850?
There are a few Mary Ann Walker's born in Basford in 1834 according to Freereg so I guess I need to get her marriage certificate to find out which is mine if anyone could help confirm a marriage date that would be fantastic  ;D

Jul/Aug/Sep 1849
Radford
Ref  15  842

Has both a Henry Shepherd and a Mary Ann Walker on the same page.

Highly likely this is your couple,

Just wish I could spot them on 1851!

Think Ive got them, dont know why I couldnt spot this earlier when I was looking

HO 107  2129  105 23

Indexed Sheapearn on Ancestry

Henry Shepeard  21   cant make out occupation, but it is the same as all his neighbours! Bn Lenton
Mary Ann 20  bn Nottingham
Clara 2 mths bn Lenton

There is the slight issue that Clara becomes Samuel ........... ???

But I think it must be them.

Modified later to add - no this isnt them, see later posts.

Hi lizdb,
Thanks for looking. I have a feeling the 1851 couple you mention are the other Henry and Mary Ann Shepherd as Clara if I remember rightly appears with them later with different children which made me realise there were two couples with the same names of similar ages living in the same place when I first started looking up this branch but at least it seems likely that the marriage is mine!

No!  Cancel that 1851!

THIS must be them, with the child Samuel ..

Trent Place, Lenton
Mary Sheapeard widow 56
Henry son married 24  lace maker
Mary  dtr 21 married
Rubion? Son 22 unmarried
Charles son 20
Samuel 1 son        all bn Lenton

I think it should be that Mary is daughgter-in-law, not daughter, and Samuel grandson, not son!

At least the names of Henrys brothers and mum give us a clue when looking for Henry in 1841.
Then, if his dad is alive then, you will have an idea when you get that marriage cert as to whether it is your Henry and Mary or the other one, though of course it is unlikely the other Mary was also nee Walker, that would be too much!
