Addresses in the Isle of Bute.
« on: Monday 07 July 14 12:40 BST (UK) »
Hi. In a branch of my tree:- (James Coates Purdon and Susannah Dempster nee Buick who lived in Greenock)  most of the girl offspring appear to have a penchant for Bute. One married and moved to Rothesay later in life. One went to Canada, married and it was her mother-in-law who gave her inward passenger address as 'Belmont', 27 Argyle Terrace, Rothesay in 1922. Susannah (above), left Gourock after the death of her husband in 1921 and died two moths later at 'Daisy Cottage', St Ninians Bay, North Bute. I can recall my father (b1913) telling me about holidaying at St Ninians. I am wondering if the reason for all this, is a yet to be discovered relative. Post Office Directory give the Misses Campbell at 27 Argyle Terrace in 1911 and nothing for Daisy. So, does anyone have any records of occupants of the above address. I know that this is a long shot. Many thanks.

Hi Tasman

Later directories for Bute, 1913/14/15, included here http://archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3Ascottishdirectories&sort=-publicdate&page=2  There may also be later ones on further pages.

One other place to check online is the valuation rolls, pay to view, on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ You could search the later ones for 1905/1915/1920 for example. I can see a few entries showing for Bute/Daisy* (for place search).

1911 a few Campbell's lived on Argyle Ter, Ann and Isa as well as a Colin and a Janet.  http://digital.nls.uk/directories/browse/pageturner.cfm?id=85533645

1915 Valuations Colin was the owner/occupier of Argyle Lodge.  Janet and Alexander were tenants of 24 Argyle Ter and there is no other Campbell's on the street.

To follow sancti's find here are the Daisybank owners/occupants.

1920   Owner       JOHNSTONE   ELIZABETH SIMPSON   DWELLING HOUSE DAISYBANK GLEBELANDS   /   ROTHESAY   ROTHESAY BURGH   VR75 / 25 / 128
1920   Owner       MACFARLANE   DUNCAN   HOUSE DAISYBANK KILCHATTAN BAY   /   KINGARTH   BUTE COUNTY   VR93 / 19 / 47
1920   Tenant Occupier       SHAW   SAMUEL   HOUSE DAISYBANK KILCHATTAN BAY   /   KINGARTH   BUTE COUNTY   VR93 / 19 / 47
1920   Owner Tenant Occupier       STEVENSON   JANE   DWELLING HOUSE DAISYBANK GLEBELANDS   /   ROTHESAY   ROTHESAY BURGH   VR75 / 25 / 128
1920   Tenant Occupier       WHYTE   WILLIAM SIMPSON   DWELLING HOUSE DAISYBANK GLEBELANDS   /   ROTHESAY   ROTHESAY BURGH   VR75 / 25 / 128

I found no Daisy Cottage on Bute which doesn't mean there wasn't one.  The only Campbell at a Daisy Cottage is an Alexander and Margaret, and they were in Perth.

Hi All. Thank you for all your efforts. I should have mentioned the Canmore find of a definite 'Daisy Cottage'. I have been chasing those pesky Purdons back to 1799 tonight.  My attempt was thwarted by a NO IMAGE on SP, but a lovely lady, Eileen, is going to get back to me. I will check out all the above tomorrow. Many thanks.

Can we take it that the James Coates Purdon and Susannah Dempster Buick who married on 17 June 1872 in Monifieth, Angus, Scotland are the same ones you refer to?

Also, have you went through these :-  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0180s/

St Ninians Bay is also called Straad - a small village just off the bay but did have it's own school (now a house if I remember correctly)  http://www.british-towns.net/scotland/argyll-bute/bute/straad

Yes it's still there planning application http://publicaccess.argyll-bute.gov.uk/publicaccess/propertyDetails.do;jsessionid=392A50D480CCDCCF9275756AA9BE22AE?activeTab=summary&keyVal=IBC3PSCH40000

No google street view because of isolated area but someone might have an old pic using Straad as the search rather than St Ninians Bay.
