Rev James WAUGH marriage Betty YULE c 1768
« on: Friday 05 September 14 05:31 BST (UK) »
Hi - not sure if this is the correct forum - please re direct if necessary.

James Waugh (1732-1786) and Betty Yule (or Yooll and variations thereof) (1735-) both born in Roxburghshire.
Another family researcher seems to think that they were married around 1768 - which would make sense as the first child was born in 1770. All children were born in Sunderland, Durham where James was the first Minister of the Spring Garden Lane Presbyterian Church.
  • John b 1770
    Isobella b 1772
    Agnes b 1773
    Elizabeth 1775
    James 1777
    Margaret 1779
James 1780 (presumably first James deceased)
    Thomas 1781

Have checked Scotland's People, Family Search, Ancestry and Find My Past for any marriage of a James Waugh to a derivation of Betty (she was known in the family as Elizabeth Yule) in either Scotland or England on the assumption that she may have previously married and the surname had changed. The closest I can find in name and date is marriage to an Elspeth Dodds in Hobkirk in May 1770. (First child born in September 1770)
In 1766 he was in Edinburgh - a secondary source ("A Historical and Descriptive View of the Parishes of Monkweamouth and Bishopwearmouth and the Port and Borough of Sunderland, 1819" George Gebbutt) states that:
"Soon after the establishment of this body of dissenters, many who had belonged to it in Scotland having emigrated to Sunderland agreed to meet for prayer and religious conference in the present theatre for which purpose it had previously been occupied by the Methodists. Here their number increasing, they resolved to apply to the Burgher Synod for a stated minister. In compliance with their request, the Rev. James Waugh was sent, who being approved of, was ordained by the Edinburgh Presbytery..."
Another secondary source stated that he was serving at Blackfriars in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire when he was called to Sunderland.

As he was a Minister I can't imagine that he wasn't married.

Are there any other sources that I could check online?  Or any thoughts of a possible explanation.
I just keep thinking that I must be missing something obvious due to my lack of knowledge of Scotland.

Would appreciate any advice on a potential next step.

Many thanks
OzJane

Not every marriage was recorded and not every record survives, but worth checking might be:

- the on-line catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland
- the records of graduates of the various universities
- the Fasti (in case he had been the minister of a parish before his move south)

I checked out the Fasti but the only thing I could find was this.
Fasti vol 7 page 481
Maling’s Rigg Church
JOHN DRYSDALE, born Edinburgh, ordained 13th April 1809……He married Elizabeth Waugh, Bishopwearmouth, probably grand-daughter of James Waugh, first minister of Spring Garden Lane Chapel, Sunderland.
Lawrie name in Fife (and elsewhere) with all its various spellings.

An online list of ministers of Blackfriars does not include James Waugh, however I also found this:

"The first minister of Spring Garden Lane Secession (Burgher)
Church was the Rev. James Waugh. Garbutt states that he was
sent by the Synod at the request of the congregation and
approved of by them. He was ordained by the Presbytery of
Edinburgh, there being then no organised Presbytery in the
north of England in connection with the denomination. Mr.
Waugh came from the congregation of Blackfriars, Jedburgh,
and was in his 32nd year when ordained. After a ministry of
20 years he died in July, 1786. Not much is known of his
ministry, but Gartnitt says it was highly acceptable and the
congregation increased. His life is described as laborious and
indefatigable"

I take that to mean that he was a member of the congregation of Blackfriars, but not its minister, and that he was subsequently ordained, presumably by the Associate Presbytery of Edinburgh rather than that of the Church of Scotland.

National Records of Scotland, Ref. CH3/568/59, Miscellaneous papers: includes Printed petition signed by session and trustees of congregation in Sunderland, James Waugh, minister, of the burgher church there, for financial assistance. 25 February 1775.

"Registers of the Secession Churches in Scotland" compiled by Diane Baptie, available from SAFHS http://www.safhs.org.uk/publications.asp,  might help in the search for James Waugh's marriage if a record exists.

Thanks to you all for your replies, I'm learning quickly I hope, about Scots sources.
buckhind - the link is correct, the Maling Rigg connection is the line I'm following, sadly for John Drysdale and Elizabeth Waugh, their only son was convicted of embezzlement and transported here, though he did make good in the end!
sancti - thanks for the link to Glasgow University - will follow  up.
Isabel, I wasn't sure what 'member of the congregation' was, you're right of course, he must have been a member of the congregation then was ordained to go to Durham. Will check out SAFHS and see what I can find.
Again appreciate your assistance in ensuring that I look to all the possible sources.
If I have any luck will let you know.
Cheers
