Joseph Smith - The Invisible Man - Birth Search Please
« on: Sunday 02 February 14 16:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Trying to get a lead on a Joseph Smith who is turning out to be a bit of a mystery, everyone remembers him through the mists of time but no one can pin point his birth, marriage or death records. All of his siblings are deceased and I’m talking to children of his brothers children so memories are thin. I have ordered many birth certificates with fingers crossed and so far he still manages to escape me. Information below

Father William James Smith (b 12/10/1881, d 5 OCT 1966) Born Islington London England
Mother Mary Jane Smith nee Smith (b 18/02/1885, d unknown) Born Weston, Hertfordshire

Siblings
Sidney G Smith b 1906 HITCHIN Hertfordshire England
Winifred R Smith b 1907 HITCHIN Hertfordshire England d unknown
Violet E Smith b 1908 HITCHIN Hertfordshire England  – d 19133
Adelaide Smith b 1910 HITCHIN Hertfordshire England – d 1963
Ruby Smith unknown dates
Francis Smith b 1913 HITCHIN Hertfordshire England – d 2005
Joseph Smith Unknown dates
George F Smith b 1915 HITCHIN Hertfordshire England – d 1998
Ernest H Smith b 1919 Letchworth, Hertfordshire – d 2000
Bertram L Smith b 1920 Letchworth, Hertfordshire  – d 1993

If someone can perform a wider bap or birth look up against parish record it would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi Robin,

Who did Joseph marry? Please do not post the name if by any chance they are still alive.

The reason I ask is that perhaps we can locate him via his marriage, that's unless you have already tried.

It may be that Joseph was a name he wished to be known as rather than the name he was given at birth.

Hi there
I've told that he may have married an Ann
But that's all I have. I'm also advised by my cousins that she is also no longer living.
Many thanks

Have you tried looking at FreeBMD to find the births of Joseph and Ann's? children to see what name is given for the mother's surname?

I do appreciate this is not what you were initially asking for but sometimes you need to find a starting point to help you progress further  :).

It may be that Joseph was a name he wished to be known by rather than the name he was given at birth.

Hi there
thanks for coming back to me again.
just read over my first post, it should read ' I’m talking to children of his brothers children'
I missed out a key word. I don't know anyone under him. I'm talking to Smiths under his bothers and sisters.  Very large smith family who moved around and didn't know each other. I have been told that he was a fireman and lived in an old prefab on Bedford Rd Letchworth, then moved to Hitchin later in life.
regards
