His name appears as Gus Lewis on a WW1 Honour Board in Australia. 
It doesn't show he was KIA / DOW however have found more men than indicated as such, sadly didn't return home.

The HB was unveiled in April 1916 and a newspaper article I found confirms his name is shown so it narrows the search (when he enlisted) but alas, so far no luck.

Thanks to all for input ... any thoughts on where to track next would be appreciated.

If a first name search draws a blank maybe he had a second christian name that was Gus or could be shortened/changed to Gus. Makes the search a lot broader though.
