Limerick- Church Records
« on: Wednesday 01 February 06 22:16 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please advise me as to where, or as to whom, I should approach for a search of the marriage/birth records c.1800 for St.John's, St.Mary's, St.Michael's, St.Munchins' and St.Patrick's Parishes in Limerick.

Many thanks.

Pam...Sydney, Australia.

Unfortunately your going to have to right to each parish church and hope for the best as we don't have a coordinated ancestry service in Limerick anymore.

Sharon,
Would you happen to know what has happened to all the records that Limerick Archives used to hold? Are they still languishing in some office somewhere, I wonder?

Thanks,
Mags

I would love to know too Mags, I have sent about 15 letters to various parishes enclosing monies and I don't even get an answer either by email or letter, it is very frustrating!
Apart from expensive research resources and a flight from Australia I am at a stalemate with my Limerick ancestors.

Forever Frustrated Pam......Sydney :'( :'( :'(

It was Limerick City Archives, the Limerick County Archives is still there by appointment only and its almost impossible to find out what they have as they don't have an online (or even off line that you could send for) inventory, but I'm sure they don't have them, they keep all the council papers, and the such like.
There all in "storage" there in a mouldy shed according to someone who used to work there. Waiting for our council to see the benefit of having an archive, stupid blind council, grrr, had to vent.

Sharon

extra note: The only way to access the Limerick baptism and marriage records at the moment (apart from the grace of the local clergy) is through the national Library in Dublin.

Thanks for that Sharon, I didn't put this in my last post but I have emailed on two occasions both newspapers in Limerick, as well as the Council, with no reply by anyone. I can understand the Council for if they are anything like Councils in Australia, the only reason  someone works for them here is that they wouldn't get a job in private enterprise.

I , with others will remain frustrated I suppose.

I have just had a search of researchers who are based in Dublin who will carry out searches for the Limerick records, they are extremely expensive if you as me, but worth a shot if your desperate.

Thanks for your thoughts on the Limerick Archives situation.
Unfortunately my ancestors were in the diocese of Cashel and Emly, so access to these records at the National Library is denied by the archbishop. The only other option is to pay at TFHR, so you might end up paying a lot of money and not even get a positive result if they don't find the record you want.

As Pam said, grr...!!!
