Raynham & Arson at Buxhall Mill (1815)
« on: Wednesday 05 June 13 23:41 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with locating info a Mr. Raynham, one time miller of the old post mill in Buxhall?

The mill was burnt down c.1815 and I understand that Raynham, miller the the time, was found to have committed arson.  Any info on bankruptcy, court case, etc would be great.

This info comes, apparently, from Ipswich Journal of 16th July 1815?

Think he was one John RAYNHAM.   Report in Cambridge Chronicle & Journal dated 12 Aug 1814 Suffolk Assizes - charged with maliciously setting fire to his mill with intent to defraud Norwich Union Fire Office.....  (British Newspaper Archive).

Hi Keziah,

Your quite right...That's my man!
I wonder what happened to him.  They took arson pretty seriously back in the day!

No obvious burials on the Suffolk Burial Index that would fit but as you say convicted of a serious crime he may well have faced a very severe plenty.

A John Raynham married in Buxhall in 1811 - sorry no further info.  Could be your man or his son.

Do you know how old your John Raynham was?

Seems milling was not a profitable business in Buxhall - Bury & Norwich Post Feb 15 1815 The creditors of Ebeneezer Cooper late of Buxhall, miller were called to a meeting at the Swan Inn, Stowmarket.

No idea of age.  I only had an entry that a Mr. Raynham had burnt down his post mill, and that a new smock mill was built on the site in 1815 for Mr. Clover (miller), this in turn was pulled down and the current tower mill built c1865.

Ebeneezer Cooper seems to have been fighting a losing finacial battle back in 1811 when he was ordered to surrender to a Commission of Bankrupt  at the Angel Inn in BStE, at the time he was "miller" at Buxhall (London Gazette 1811/12/21).  May be Raynham's problems are related to this episode?

I have no idea of age at present.  Do you know who & when John married?

More investigating is required!
