William Swanson Ross d.1880
« on: Thursday 24 July 14 16:18 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I'm wondering if anyone might be able to tell me where this chap is buried, please?
I have the most fantastic obituary from an unknown (trimmed) newspaper of the day and it tells of the procession to the graveyard but doesn't mention which one!!

His details are as follow ...

WILLIAM SWANSON ROSS
  • Born c1830 (Aberdeen) - died 29 June 1880 (Ipswich)
  • Buried 30th June 1880 - where??
  • He was a Sgt-Major in the Army and had served in the Crimea
  • Husband of Annie Eliza GRAY
  • Father to Jeannette Annie Swanson ROSS, Hamilton Alex ROSS, Charles ROSS and Edith Georgina Hamilton ROSS (and other children by a previous marriage)
I am given to understand that the grave has now been flattened.

For your information and general interest, here is the obituary ...

Is there any way of finding out just exactly which churchyard he's in, please?

MT ;)

UPDATE: Just looked again and it mentions a St. Margaret's in the next to last line - would that be correct? D'oh!!

It mentions "at the cemetery", so most probably the old Ipswich cemetery.

So ... It would be a large cemetery then, rather than a specific churchyard?

Yes it is a very large cemetery, I think they do lookups for a price, not sure how much now.
There is quite a large obituary in the Ipswich Journal and that also mentions the cemetery.

Thank you very much, Keziah.
That will be Ipswich Old Cemetery then?

I would go with what Suffolk Sue has already suggested - yes
