You could try checking the Electoral Roll using his Brighton address and see when he first appears.

Was his 1940 marriage his first marriage?
Seems to be a late starter, otherwise? Aged 41.

A tree on Ancestry has him with a first wife, called May - but I can't find anything in England/Wales using FreeBMD?

No, he was married to May Findlay in Ayr on the 29 April 1932. The following year, November 1933, she died in childbirth aged 27 years.

My father would have been 34 years old in 1932.
