Hi Pam,

So it's back to the drawing board for John Whalley b1843/44 Stockport?
I do think that John's parents are John and Martha as in the 1841 census but do you think it might be best to wait for the birth cert before going any further?

Pat.

Hi Pat

Yes I think you may be right. Also the marriage of Mary precedes the marriage to Martha. So Mary could be John's 1st wife, she dies then he marries Martha, mother of James & John.

I am going to send for it tomorrow so I'll let you know when it arrives.

Goodnight Pam

Pam,

My thinking is that John and Mary Whalley are a completely differant family but I could be wrong, we will see when you get the cert

Goodnight,
Pat

Hi - just looking at confusion of how many entries there are and where - and trying to clarify..

There appear to be three births one in each 1843 quarter of March, June and September.

Freebmd and cheshirebmd appear to have the same three.  Ancestry has only two of them (one is missing, and one is duplicated/mis-transcribed) so it does appear to be a muddle.  Hopefully this is clear...

If you search at Cheshire BMD it gives Maiden names for 2 of the three. But it does NOT tell you which quarter - just that they are 1843

CHESHIRE BMD (Local Reg Office Refs)
www.cheshirebmd.org.uk
WHALLEY   John   GRIMSHAW   1843   Ashton Town   Tameside   Cheshire   AST/10/63
WHALLEY   John                      1843   Eastham           Cheshire West   Cheshire   EAS/2/94
WHALLEY   John   ASHTON           1843   Heaton Norris   Stockport   Cheshire   HEA/7/77

if you search at freebmd it gives you the quarter - but NOT the maiden names.
Looking at the districts I think the three listed here match the ones at Cheshire BMD

FREEBMD.ORG.UK (GRO Ref)

March quarter 1843
Whalley    John        Wirral    19   321 (I think this is Eastham one)

Jun quarter 1843
Whalley    John        Stockport    19   249     (I think this is probably Heaton Norris one)

Sept quarter 1843
Whalley    John        Ashton    20   2    (this is the Ashton one)

on Ancestry (GRO Ref) you get:

John Whalley
Apr-May-Jun 1843
Registration District:   Stockport (Cheshire)
Volume:   19
Page:   249  (plus the mis transcribed p 219 entry)

John Whalley
Jul-Aug-Sep 1843
Registration District:   Ashton Under Lyne (Lancashire)
Volume:   2  (mis-transcribed should be vol 20)
Page:   2

The third entry in Wirral is not showing up on Ancestry. The page is digitised if you go page by page but it must be mistranscribed or missed out.

Also ....Just in case the cert you get is not right...

There is also a John Walley (without H) in Nantwich (Bunbury) to consider.
Two entries for him from the two sources - one giving Nantwich and one the more specific Bunbury (which is in Nantwich Reg District)

From Cheshire BMD
WALLEY   John      1843   Bunbury   Cheshire East   Cheshire   BU/04/065

From Free BMD
Dec 1843
WALLEY    John        Nantwich    19   138

Milly
McBride (Monaghan, Manchester), Derbyshire (Bollington,Cheshire), Knight (Newcastle,Staffs), Smith (Chorley, Lancs & Ireland), Tipladay (Manchester & Yorkshire) ,Steadman (Madeley,Shropshire), Steele (Manchester,Glasgow), Parkinson (Wigan, Lancashire), Lovatt, Cornes & Turner (Staffs) Stott (Oldham, Lancs). All ended up Ardwick, Manchester

Hi Milly,
I looked at those birth records in some depth yesterday and came to the conclusion that John Whalley b1843 Stockport coupled with the details of his marriage and subsequent census records is the correct record.
I also found baptism and census details for James Whalley who we think is John's brother  and they also tie in well to this family.
I could of course be wrong and may yet have to eat my words but I hope, if only for the sake of Pam's pocket, that I'm not.

Regards,
Pat.
